I think I know the editions you're talking about, and yeah, they're ugly as sin. I enjoyed reading this entry. It is certainly among my favorite books as well. I've been reading some other fantasy lately (the Dying Earth series) and I keep thinking how much better Lord of the Rings is than most books.

I'm not disputing that there's a lot to these books, but what do you think about their implications about monarchy and the class symbolism of the few privileged people vs. the many (e.g. Sauron's army)?

This happened to me--read it when I was young and barely remembered it, then read it a few years ago and loved it--with Watership Down.
