Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Gokudera is 5'6'' and weighs about 119 lbs. He's thin and that's probably because on his poor-kid diet.
He doesn't have any defined muscles, but there is a little definition to his arms. He's only in middle school, and not by any means a jock. He's probably never lifted a weight in his life.
2. How old is he?
Fifteen.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He slouches. A LOT. He kicks his feet up on his desk while he's in class and sleeps like that, he always seems a little folded in on himself, even when he's standing. His posture is terrible.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He's relatively fit. Gokudera can be active, and doesn't seem to have that low of stamina for someone who smokes as much as he does. WHICH IS A LOT. Gokudera is almost always smoking.
The kid has been ingesting poison for a good part of his childhood, so when he sees his sister, he becomes very ill. He passes out, foams at the mouth, vomits, or just becomes exhausted. It's obvious that he's in A LOT of pain just from the pain she's caused him.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Gokudera is usually tense. By himself, he doesn't seem to pay much thought to how he's moving, and it's a bit easy. However, time on the street (or years) have trained him to be constantly defensive.
He can be clumsy if the situation calls for it, really. He's still a kid, after all.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
The female students in his class formed a fanclub the day he was introduced. He dislikes the attention, but it's there. It's more than likely because the Japanese girls aren't used to seeing a half Japanese-Half Italian boy with silver hair. He's exotic, but doesn't really comment on his own looks.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
He's pale, having a peachy complexion that probably came from his mother who was half Japanese.
His hands might have some roughness or light scarring to hint at the fact that he throws dynamite to defend himself.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
His hair is silver, semi-thick and stops an inch below his ears. The fringe is straight and arched at the roots, parted in the middle, and the back flips out. Ryohei has nicknamed him "Octopus head" for the way that his hairstyle looks a bit like an octopus.
When he's studying deeply, or reading, he ties it back into a tiny, pathetic, and adorable excuse for a ponytail.
9. What color are his eyes?
Gray-green, sometimes blue-green. For the most part, they're dull. The only exception would be when he wears his contact lenses into battle. They are tinted sea-foam green and are noticeably brighter than his natural eye color.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Ten years into the future, Gokudera has pierced ears, his hair is layered, and he's about a foot taller. Other than that, nope.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
HIS FOREHEAD. This guy is almost ALWAYS scowling. He can wrinkle his brow frowning so hard that it's practically San Andreas fault up to his roots.
His eyes are shaded over by the force of his frowning, so sometimes it isn't clear if he's just thinking hard or if he's actually glaring under that shadow.
His mouth. Gokudera's expression range so much that his mouth could probably extend past the rest of his face in a scream. He grinds his teeth and destroys cigarettes a lot.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Most of the time Gokudera dresses very casual. He can wear sweats, shorts and t-shirts. His uniform isn't treated with much care. He hardly ever tucks in his shirt and pulls off the delinquent-look the most.
When he has to dress up for mafia business, he does so with a lot of care. He can tie a tie, and has his shirt tucked in, buttons done, and suit pressed. It's probably from experience growing up in a mafia family that he's able to clean up pretty well.
There is only one consistency in his wardrobe. Gokudera is always sporting accessories. Whether it's fifteen belts, 20 rings, and bracelets up his arms. He has to have something of an accessory on. Even when he's suited up, he can be seen wearing studded belts and bracelets.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
They fit him well. Sometimes he can wear questionably tight pants, but that's it. Even then, he's pretty comfortable.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Casual: Flip flops, sneakers, layers, low-riding baggy jeans, sweat pants, t-shirts
Formal: SUITS. He probably knows what to look for, too. He doesn't want to bring embarrassment to the family by failing to dress appropriately.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxer-briefs. If not that, then commando, but that's probably REALLY rare.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
It's way too rough considering he's fifteen. But he's a smoker. It sounds like a growl most of the time, and is relatively deep.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He can be obnoxiously loud. He yells a lot and is quick to respond, though when the situation calls for it, he can be quiet and considerate. He knows when to shut up, but even then, he growls a lot.
There's little hesitation when he speaks unless he's confused or it's something that is personal.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
I would hope he'd have an accent, but it isn't actually stated in canon.
He sing-songs some of the time, especially when teasing, and when he gets excited, his 'r's tend to roll a little.
He growls. A lot of his responses are "GUH-!" "TCH-!" and then just base growling. Sometimes that is his only response. Also, he sputters and stutters when he's caught off guard.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He's fluent in both Italian and Japanese. He probably understands some Chinese as well, but it isn't shown or practiced.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
He probably only speaks Italian with his family and anyone from Italy in private conversations, but for the most part, since he's living in Japan, it's mostly Japanese.
During moments of formality, he will switch from referring to Tsuna as "Juudaime" (Tenth), to "Decimo".
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He's pretty quick, being able to come up with responses with seemingly little effort. Only when something requires a personal investment (family matters), does he seem to hesitate.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He's mostly inarticulate, pausing a great deal if he's feeling talkative at all. When it comes to talking about his family (blood-related), or when he's speaking with Tsuna, he tends to stutter a bit. If he's proven wrong on something, he has a bit of a hard time jumping back quickly.
When it comes to family matters (Calling everyone together for a meeting), he's good at getting the point across quickly and with little words.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Gokudera is both book and street-smart. He's spent a great deal of time on the street fighting random thugs, and because he's grown up as a mafia, has a great deal of connections through Vongola and his family.
He is easily one of the smartest students in his school. Maybe even Namimori or Japan. He sleeps in class and can answer most any question at a moment's notice. The guy reads his class textbooks and came up with his own alphabet. He spends time in class planning out new techniques for his dynamite.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He can think on his feet, but a great deal of his success comes from spending hours toiling over strategies. He sets traps and uses complicated systems that require hours of practice and preparation before going into battle. It would be easy to catch him off guard. To counteract this, he hides dynamite all over his body. Once he has a technique down, it's pretty easy for him to pull it off over and over.
Thinking on his feet often results in him injuring himself. He thinks very little of his safety when it comes to protecting the boss, or getting out of a tight spot in a short amount of time.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He's very logical. Gokudera breaks everything down into little bits and pieces, examining every angle. It's hard to get the main point when he's describing how to do a math problem, because he takes everything into consideration.
Gokudera is also a trial-and-error kind of guy. He tests most of his techniques on himself before using them in battle.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Junior High Japanese Education
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Mathematics, Sciences, and Theory are his strongpoints.
He fights with dynamite so he has a great understanding of how to apply what he's learned to real use.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
He's pretty introverted, preferring to spend time by himself to think. He doesn't hate company, but he doesn't crave it, either. The guy can be pretty loud and rambunctious when he's with the right people, and doesn't have a problem opening up to Tsuna. However, he doesn't share much of his personal history or feelings with his other fellow guardians/family members.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Gokudera has A LOT of mood swings. He can be smiling, chipper, and giddy around Tsuna one second, then screaming at Yamamoto the next.
By himself, he seems pretty cheerful or laid-back. However, if there is something distracting his boss from being happy, he can be melancholy. He blames himself for a lot of Tsuna's misery. Most of the time, he's the cause of it, too.
Gokudera rises to most any challenge, refusing to turn down fights, even if he will lose.
When he sets a goal, he will go for it until he's beaten senseless. ESPECIALLY IF IT INVOLVES THE TENTH. Nothing short of being killed will get in his way of making Tsuna happy.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He is a very suspicious person. Gokudera has a hard time trusting most everyone he meets because he feels they might try to take his position as the Tenth's right-hand, or they'll hurt him.
The kid isn't used to being around nice people. He thinks that the only reason most anyone does anything kind, is to get some form of payment. He's been used to hurt people, and people have tried to (and mostly succeeded) hurt him since he was eight.
When it comes to showing kindness, he's embarrassed. He thinks that being nice is a weakness, so he waits till most everyone is gone before doing anything truly kind.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
Gokudera is highly reactive. Most of the time he jumps to conclusions, is quick to judge, but hardly starts fights. Even the brawls he gets into on the streets seem to be from him ignoring someone else, or past grudges.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Fight. Always fight.
Except when it involves Bianchi. If he knows his sister is around, he will run away.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Gokudera actually uses a lot of puns. He laughs at the misfortune of others sometimes, though only over small things. He's not cruel enough to laugh when someone is in pain.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Not really.
I wouldn't be surprised if he is diagnosed later in life with something, though. He's a pretty unstable guy.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
- Shamal shows Gokudera how to throw dynamite and he picks it up as a weapon.
- Gokudera is a bit reckless, and when he was a child, ran into gunfire waving bombs. He broke an arm, but seemed happy about scaring the people who had been shooting at him.
- When he was eight, he discovered that his mother was a pianist his father had slept with, then "had murdered". He'd hardly seen her for the three years she'd been alive after having him, and he hadn't thought much of her besides that she was nice and liked piano. At that time he realized his father was a murderer and ran away from home.
- He spent six years on the street, trying to find a mafia family that would take him in. However, because he was a bastard, he was turned down by everyone, and basically called trash. Six years of that would make anyone a bit callous.
- The first time he met Tsuna, he threw bombs at him to test his strength as the candidate for the Vongola's Tenth boss. Tsuna was able to put them out, and in his rush to try a new, unperfected attack, nearly blew himself up. Tsuna put out the fuses in time, saved him, and Gokudera pledged undying loyalty to him and became determined to earn the spot right-hand man.
- Gokudera nearly kills himself trying to win the ring battle for Tsuna because he doesn't want to disgrace himself as the Vongola's right-hand man. In the midst of battle, he gets a swift tongue-lashing from Tsuna, and realizes that friendship is more important to his boss than his position in the mafia.
- Upon arrival in the world ten years into the future, Gokudera learns the the Tsuna of that time is dead and he'd failed to protect him. It's a bit hard for him to swallow and he lashes out a couple times because he has to accept that even with everyone else, he still wasn't able to protect him.
- Gokudera's fight with Yamamoto against Gamma. Yamamoto roughs him up a little and tells him that if he doesn't open up and trust his fellow Guardian's, he'll never be worthy of the right-hand. After that, Gokudera is able to team up with Yamamoto and the two become a bit closer. Gokudera even seems to worry about Yamamoto and defend him.
- Figuring out the Sistema C.A.I. Gokudera has to figure out a complicated system of fourteen boxes that require him to tap into five different flames in his body. He is able to form weapons based on those different characteristics. He also discovers that he has a pet, and becomes quickly attached to her.
-He disobeys a direct order from Tsuna. He goes into battle determined NOT TO DIE rather than risk dying. At the end he is able to pull out a quick attack and eventually they defeat the Millefiore.
-He learns the truth about his parents. So, apparently his father hadn't cut the brakes on his mother's car when he was three. His mother had been ill and would not marry his father. She didn't want to be burden, so tried to keep herself distant. BOTH OF HIS PARENTS LOVED HIM.
-The arrival of the Shimon family. In order to keep Tsuna safe for the inheritance ceremony, Gokudera calls a meeting and assigns groups to watch over the don-to-be. He's actually pretty good at keeping it concise, and doesn't blow anyone up!
- Successfully communicating with a UMA. He learns to listen to Shitt. P. After stalking her for some time and unsuccessfully getting her attention, he realizes that people like to be listened to. Using the name she wanted to be called by, he gets her attention, and they can work together.
- The pride battle with Shitt. P. Gokudera listens to a bunch of true, embarrassing things about his boss but is still as devoted as ever. The kicker is that he is able to fight WELL using Uri. Also he gets a full-body glomp from Shitt. P.
14. What does he fear?
His sister.
Bringing shame to the Vongola.
TSUNA'S DISSAPPROVAL.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He hopes to become the Tenth's right-hand man and to be valued as a part of a mafia family.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
HE IS SECRETLY A VERY VERY NICE GUY. He says he doesn't like kids, but he brought toys for Lambo when he was in the hospital. He says he hates his sister, but he shows up at her "wedding" as support. He looks like he's going to cry when he discovers that Yamamoto is alive after their fight with Gamma.
He's never shared the fact that he's a bastard with ANYONE in the Vongola. Tsuna and Yamamoto find out from Reborn, who is a god at researching people and mind-reading. He's probably worried they will think less of him, or pity him for his sad past.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
For most of the canon, he thinks of his father as a murderer. He hates him.
He never really knew his mother. Gokudera was only allowed to see her a few times a year. He just thought she was some nice lady that liked piano. Still, he liked her and the piano as well, so practiced just for her. Until she stopped showing up and missed his third birthday.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He has an older sister, Bianchi. He hates her. She fed him poison cookies before each piano recital. She also used him as a guinea pig for her poison cooking.
She was the only one who tried to stop him from running away when he was little.
They have obviously communicated after that, since he's aware of what kind of boyfriend she had, and has pictures to prove it.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
He's not close to them. He can't stand any of them.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Tsuna, Reborn, and surprisingly enough, Lambo seem closest to him. Tsuna is the one he follows, his boss and his best friend. If he could be closer than that, he would probably die from happiness.
Reborn called him over to Japan to meet Tsuna in the first place. He respects him, but isn't afraid to whine. Reborn is as much his mentor as he is Tsuna's.
He treats Lambo like his little brother. They bicker and fight constantly, but Gokudera obviously cares about his well-being. He scolds him for sleeping when it's cold (because he could get sick). He also kicks Levi's ass during the last ring battle for attacking him.
Shamal. Though he's not part of the Vongola, he seems to be the one person Gokudera admired while he was growing up as a kid. He based his hairstyle and weapons off of Shamal, and goes to him for support. The guy is a terrible role-model, but the closest thing to a dad that Gokudera has.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
TSUNA.
I'VE COVERED THIS. COME ON.
Gokudera tried to kill him, almost killed himself. Tsuna saved him. Now he pretty much stalks him.
6. Does he have other close friends?
He and Yamamoto are pretty close in that Yamamoto is persistent and doesn't seem put off by Gokudera's constant insults. They've teamed up on several occasions, and besides Tsuna, Yamamoto is the only other guardian that knows about his past.
They are close enough that Yamamoto could give him a stern talking to and Gokudera ACTUALLY LISTENED... even if he did have to have a tooth knocked out over it.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
Gokudera is very pugnacious. He actively pushes people away, and doesn't want them to get the better of him, especially if they aren't part of the famiglia.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends. They are his family. His real family has hurt him too much for him to stay around. He left the country in the hopes of being accepted by a new family.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No. He's too young to be getting married or anything, and he's only really devoted to his job as the Tenth's right-hand.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
Uhh.. Tsuna? Not romantically, of course~! He just wants ALL of his attention and gets jealous if Tsuna favors someone over him.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He isn't looking. :|
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
NO.
HE HATES CHILDREN.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Yamamoto.
The guy only had to joke once about becoming Tsuna's right hand and IT WAS ON. Gokudera likes a challenge, and so does Yamamoto, so they both team up in their own odd way. Though it's pretty obvious Yamamoto is just trying to rile him up, Gokudera is actively mean to him.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale?
Wow. Really, he could go either way. It's not stated, and he's been surrounded by girls for a while.
He's said once that they are troublesome and nuisances. He'd probably do better with a guy because no woman in their right mind would tolerate his attitude.
I'll give him like... a 2 or a 3. He's not attracted to either sex, though.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
He's pretty clueless. Being raised around someone as lecherous as Shamal has probably made him familiar with more than he should be at his age, but he doesn't apply anything he's learned. It's not all that important to him, basically.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
No
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
September 9 -- Virgo
Many Virgos can be found working in the "service to others" industries, ranging from welfare work, doctors, school-teachers through to practicing natural forms of healing like massage, herbal remedies etc.
Shy, they are happy to allow others to take center-stage and often generate their time and energy into making those they love happy or successful.
Meticulous and reliable
Practical and diligent
Intelligent and analytical
Fussy and a worrier
Overcritical and harsh
Perfectionist and conservative
On the surface they are emotionally cold, and sometimes this goes deeper, for their habit of suppressing their natural kindness may in the end cause it to atrophy, with the result that they shrink from committing themselves to friendship, make few relationships, and those they do make they are careful to keep superficial.
But the outward lack of feeling may, in some individuals born under this sign, conceal too much emotion, to which they are afraid of giving way because they do not trust others, nor do they have confidence in themselves and their judgments. This is because they are conscious of certain shortcomings in themselves
They combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. They have an excellent eye for detail but they may be so meticulous that they neglect larger issues.
With these qualities, they are better as subordinates than leaders. Responsibility irks them and they often lack the breadth of strategic vision that a leader needs Virgoans are essentially tacticians, admirable in the attainment of limited objectives.
I think he fits this to a T
Chinese Zodiac:
Metal Goat- 1991
Metal Goats are tough on the outside, fragile inside. Those close to Metal Goats understand and accept this. Metal Goats are very cultural and they’re most appreciative of the arts.
Hmm... I'm not feeling it here as much.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
If he is, it doesn't show. He was probably raised Catholic since he was born in Italy. However, he does nothing more than wear a cross around his neck.
At one point he starts trying to perform an exorcism on his sister when she's possessed by Mukuro.
He loves the strange and probably has done research into several religions, finding the most bizarre the kind that he can apply.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He would shoot himself in the head if the Tenth told him to. He probably wouldn't want to.... but he owes his life to Tsuna. He will do ANYTHING for him.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He's tolerant, and actually REALLY intrigued by anything most normal people would consider strange.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
I think he has a Yamamoto prejudice. He doesn't seem to like jocks, but that's really it...
He also dislikes children and anyone older than him.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
NO ONE HAS SEEN WHERE HE LIVES.
He could live in a box for all the reader's know. Considering he has the money to buy his accessories, he's probably okay. Maybe the Vongola is paying him? It's all theories, but I wouldn't be surprised if his sister forwards him money. Unlike most of the people Tsuna has met, Gokudera does NOT live in his house....
... or so we think.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
To his teachers, he's an annoyingly bright student who will not follow orders. He doesn't really like authority figures, so that's not going to change any time soon.
To other students he is still very strange, and the girls still like him, though the manga doesn't show it as much.
He has made a name for himself in the mafia world as "Smoking Bomb Hayato" and has been looked down upon. However, after the Inheritance ceremony, he will be the storm of the Vongola, the center of relentless attacks and a reliable right-hand man to the Tenth.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
I HAVE NO IDEA.
He probably lives in an apartment on his own and uses it to recover at the end of the day. Maybe the reason he doesn't share info about his home is because he wants it to STAY a place of solitude.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Accessories. Belts, rings, bracelets, chains, necklace, treats for Tsuna, and his cigarettes
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
Part time student full time mafioso. His attention is always on furthering the family and helping Tsuna any way he can.
Sometimes he is irresponsible and it ends up hurting Tsuna, but it's usually minor, and he makes up for it in how hard dependable he is.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He is a **~Mystery Hunter~** Gokudera loves the supernatural and probably watches a great deal of sci-fi shows, reading tabloids, and keeping up to date on any of the mafia families in the area.
The guy fanboys over assassination groups that are aligned with the Vongola, and spends a lot of time working on his battle techniques.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
The guy hasn't had a home-cooked meal since he was like, eight. Most of them were poisonous. He's not a big eater. He just kinda pecks at what he gets and is appreciative of it.
