Is America capable of launching anything more than a covert attack on either country... it would seem not.

This piece is incomplete without taking a stand on whether the current troop strength is sufficient and can either bear a direct conflict with Iraq's neighbors or at least provide a staging area for rapid deployment for other forces. If a major uptick in guerilla activities could pose a significant threat to the occupation, as Friedman suggests, wouldn't conflict with Iraq's neighbors pose an even greater threat? So how effective could the Iraq occupation possibly be in pressuring other regional "bad guys"?

And was a demonstration of American might in Iraq the best way to make Iran give up its Nuclear Weapons programme, when the logical response would be to intensify it?Agreed. Friedman makes the mistake of examining US policy toward Iraq & the Middle East in a vacuum, ignoring the conclusions drawn from its policy toward other proliferators.
