I'd have to see a photo, but is there a way to make the separation between rooms more distinct? Perhaps you can hang a curtain between the living room and dining room?

Alternately, or even in addition, you could choose *not* to have a neutral dining area. I wish I could remember the "rules" for what colors to paint to encourage enjoyment of food, or whatever, but something like a sky blue would both compliment and contrast with the burgundy and the sage (or jade), and distract from the Christmas-y-ness. Could you add accents to one of the rooms, maybe something with a feather or a sponge on the paint? That way it wouldn't be two rooms of solid colored walls.

My friend has a dark green living room and a red kitchen, and it actually looks very good- very Victorian colored.
