Antilamentation -- Dorianne Laux

Regret nothing. Not the cruel novels you read
to the end just to find out who killed the cook.

Not the insipid movies that made you cry in the dark,
in spite of your intelligence, your sophistication.

Not the lover you left quivering in a hotel parking lot,
the one you beat to the punchline, the door, or ( Read more... )

If you ever want a poet to check out, I highly recommend Laux: Her work is golden, sassy, and smart!

I like to think of you and your students reading Laux out loud to one another: what an image.

this made my eyes water up. I put Laux down years ago because i didn't agree with her craft. Thank you for showing me what an amateur decision that was.

Um, friend, you HAVE to tell me more about this not "agreeing with her craft!" I am so CURIOUS.

I find myself slipping into Laux moods. My taste runs up one mountain, around to the ocean, through the valley, and around and around again. But, I still come back to her because of her images and the twists of her poems.

I enjoy her because she has a way of shoveling out the important bits of a narrative. I like her because she's braver than I am: she puts it all on the line and says what I might allude to. And hell, I like her because of poems like this.
