Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

-- Calvin Coolidge

What is persistence? What does that mean? I know what it means - I know the definition from Merriam-Webster and the OED - but what does it mean for me.

What a stunning tattoo.

I post poems like this because of friends like you. balladsofmirth January 3 2010, 23:37:36 UTC
You know, I was just ranting to a friend about how brilliant the woman is: the line breaks, the URGENCY & pacing of the poem, and the risks she takes with emotion. I wish I could be as honest as she is in her work. One day, I hope.

I'd say that persistence is unabashed determination in accomplishing a goal. When does persistence become stubbornness?

Unabashed determination is an interesting way to look at it. I think I've always balked or held bis towards the word persistence: both fair and unfair. In my head, persistence was always chasing or hounding someone or somethign until you "got your way." I realize now that persistence could be in terms of the self: focusing on goals and seeing them through despite speed bumps and the like. It doesn't have to be the image of a dog at a table hoping and howling for food that's not theirs. I like the quotation because it alludes to the work the talented need to do to succeed. You know?

And yes, when does persistence become stubbornness?

I'm glad yr around these el jay parts more! It's nice.

Oh, yes please share your tattoo!

I haven't read a full-length Glück book in a long, long time. I think it's time.
