OK. So I happened into an extra ticket for the new Star Wars movie last night. I went in more than a little skeptical as a result have the huge let down I felt after seeing the previous two, but the trailer for the final installment had sparked a bit of interest.

Just because you have the ability to do something doesn't necessarily mean that you ( Read more... )

I have always said that computer effects and dazzaling eye candy should not become the central focus of a movie. I have not seen this last one but your critique is interesting and informative. I fealt this way about the last two. It had such potential too. THe underlying story of a galactic empire at war with rebels could have been done with more thought. I mean who is the "Empire" besides the Emporer and Darth Vader? From what political upheavel and geopolitical catrophe did they emerge. Am I forgeting or do we know why the rebels bang?

I've come to expect the horrible dialog and awkward acting from Star Wars now too. That's actually sad. I watched the old ones last night and the dialog was actually just as bad. BUT I did notice that the editing was much better and the storyline flowed more smoothly in Episodes 3-5. I think in these prequals George Lucas got lazy because he takes his existing fan base for granted. The stars of these prequals might regret being involved because everyone assumes they're bad actors now. I don't think anyone could sound cool saying things like "I'm obsessed with you! I eat, sleep, and breath you!" (or whatever it was Anakin said when he fist told Padme he loved her in Episode II)

Anyway so I would never expect a masterpiece from George Lucas. He was never well rounded enough as a director and his faults have become more pronounced over the years. I'm going tonight expecting nothing but eye candy and action, with a little improvement in storyline over episodes 1 and 2.
