I haven't lived off campus per se, but I have spent multiple days in a row off campus. From my experience, living about a 15 minute walk from a T stop on the Red Line that's not too far from Kendall/Central (i.e. Davis, Porter, or someplace in Boston proper) is quite managable. You just have to get up about half an hour earlier in the morning, but I found I actually enjoyed that. Plus you can bike to class if you like, or even walk if you miss the train (though it's a fairly long walk).
In some ways, I think proximity to a supermarket is perhaps even more important. Porter's a good location like that.
