hello friends;
it's been some time since i've last posted. much could be said, less will.
i am currently in salt lake city, covering the NCAA Tournament for the Gonzaga Bulletin and the yearbook. We narrowly beat out Xavier today in Round 1, and we'll take on Indiana Saturday. If we do well after that, I'll be heading down to San Diego or wherever the next round is the next weekend. this is a pretty sweet deal, as it conveniently landed during spring break, and the publications board picked up the tab for airfare, swank hotel accomodations, and a per diem for expenses.
i got here yesterday after a few difficulties, arriving from seattle. i'd been there with sarah, helping her settle in. bryce hughes stopped by for a few days, and we painted the town red. or, at least, a light shade of magenta. i got to meet sarah's new roommates, Robbie and Jessie, who are VERY gay. this guy Jessie is a stereotype of a stereotype, insisting all artwork in the apartment must be hung at *exactly* eye level ... Robbie and Jessie are both great guys though, and all idiosyncrasies will probably slowly shift from slightly annoying to ignorable droning to charming to comforting. hanging out with mr. hughes was quite nice too; we ate indian food and laughed at bad records.
sarah and i also had a very nice time together, despite working through a horrific cold on her part. i can only pray i won't break out with some sort of delayed-reaction to it. we watched GI Jane and a few other movies, and had some good times unloading/unpacking stuff.
um, before getting sidetracked into a back-story, the few difficulties previously mentioned were getting lost on the way to sea-tac AFTER forgetting my phone charger and backtracking to pick it up, putting us like 40 minutes behind schedule -- luckily, we'd left early anyhow and i arrived at the airport an hour and twenty minutes before my flight. after checking in and slogging through security, i discovered that my flight was delayed for TWO hours. so, i went outside for a smoke and had to go through security again, this time with a line four times as long. then, after arriving in SLC, i had to wait 40 min for a shuttle, and then my hotel was denying me entry, claiming the Pub Board didn't enclose payment information. These guys at the hotel told me that i was supposed to pay for the room myself -- "Everyone else from Gonzaga paid their own way," they told me. "Look fuckers," I said to them in my mind, "I am not EVERYONE ELSE." So, a few phone calls and several cigarettes later, I was checked in and I went up to my room.
Fucking huge.
My bathroom has a bathroom.
And, as luck would have it, I have a little patio outside, which i've gained clearance to smoke upon.
Anyway, I took the media shuttle to University of Utah, where I picked up my press pass after getting the ROYAL runaround (something i've come to expect at this event -- i'll ask someone directions, they'll direct me to a phony destination, where another employee will tell me to go somewhere else). at this point, i've missed the press conference and GU's practice time, the things which i'd scheduled a flight to arrive at noon for -- three and a half hours beforehand should have been plenty of time, right?
i'm spending way too much time talking about things, which probably means i should sit down and get ALL of my thoughts out, so i'll do that tomorrow. i'll talk more about what happened TODAY later on. in the meantime, enjoy some pictures.
