Ravenloft Game Log - Session 3

So I am in New Jersey. Our train was delayed, so we didn't get in until after midnight, and the lion cub woke me up before 6. Nonetheless, I will attempt to relate what happened at game on Tuesday!

Our party had spotted something moving in the mists in the graveyard. The figure moved away upon seeing the party, but Yves-Michel confronted what appeared to be a peasant and claimed to be the groundskeeper for the cemetery. One suspicion led to another, and the man fled, Yves-Michel giving chase! The party followed what they suspected to be some form of undead to the tomb of Mikhail, devoted husband, father, and son. Conversing from opposite sides of the tombstone, the party learned that several intelligent, and relatively peaceful, undead lived in the graveyard, supposedly unconnected with the recent zombie invasion.

Deciding to leave the residents of the graveyard in peace (for now at least) the party turned their attention to the church, which they found radiated evil and was the likely source of the zombies. Several plans were discussed, and the decision was made to create a trap for the zombies, enter the church and kill as many as they could, luring the rest outside. The local population was enlisted to help digging a pit and lining it with sharpened stakes. However, half-way through construction, the party was surprised when the doors of the church opened! The priest Danovich appeared, wild-eyed, covered in blood, and railing at the peasants angrily! His presence brought with it the aura of madness, and mayhem descended upon the village. The villages either fled or began attacking each other. Several of the party attacked their comrades. The rest rushed into the church to attack the priest, only to become surrounded by zombies.

Danovich, after becoming seriously wounded in the fight, retreated behind the altar down a hole leading to a basement level of the church. Ashlyn gave speedy chase, jumping down the hole after him. By the time a few of the party were able to follow, they found Ashlyn facing down a terrible abomination that Danovich referred to as his (deceased) son, Doru. An ugly fight followed, with the blasphemous creature literally chewing up and spitting out its opponents. Ashlyn fell in battle and Zidara was badly wounded. Yves-Michel was paralyzed by Danovich and then savaged by Doru, leaving the mage and the archers to face the monster in melee combat. Things looked bleak for the party, but amazingly they were able to survive long enough to rally, knocking Danovich unconscious and focusing all their firepower on the creature that used to be Doru. Finally, after many blows, the creature fell.

Alas, Ashlyn did not survive the battle. With her last breaths, she asked the party to find her lost comrades and see to their proper burial if they had fallen. She bequeathed her possessions to the party and urged them to attempt to see her mission to completion: to find the lost Sunsword.
