I've been working on this one for a while, and could use some assistance! Here's the list I have so far:

Civil War: "I'm Free" by the Who (from Tommy)

WWI: Over There

WWII: I can't think of any, but look up old movies, there must be a good song in one of them

Polk was after 1812 (1840s). You could wrap it around the war of 1812 section.

What type of music are you looking for? Most of what you have is rock/pop. There'd be plenty of more oldies style things for WWI and WWII.

I'm looking less for "song sung during this historical time" and more "snarky modern day commentary" or "rock cover of historical song."

Civil War: The Scarlet Tide (written by Elvis Costello, but get the Alison Krauss version from the "Cold Mountain" movie soundtrack if you can)

The Great Depression: any number of songs from the "O Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack (which I have)

Scarlet Tide is an awesome song, but not enough reference to historical event. I have Big Rock Candy Mt from O Brother (which is an awesome soundtrack!)

"Funny" and "WW2" lead inexorably to "Der Fuhrer's Face" by Spike Jones. :) For colonization, I like "Gramatan" by Too Much Joy.

If you need more Vietnam, there's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy", Pete Seeger, which claims to be talking about the previous war and thus can be a bridge piece.

The Beatles' "Back in the USSR" is a snarky Cold War comment poking fun of the Beach Boys.

Boston's "Corporate America" is epically snarky, modern period.

I feel like I ought to have a colonial one and I can't get anything in my head other than a kid's voice reciting "Listen my children and you shall here of the midnight ride of Paul Revere" which is a) later and b) unhelpful.

"The Dead Heart" by Midnight Oil is about native Australians, but I suspect the essence might translate for genocide/cultural annihilation. Cheery!

I also have "Follow the Drinking Gourd" for Civil War period, now I think on it.

Yeah, I have had that Midnight Oil song stuck in my head for the past couple of days! I feel like I ought to have one about Native Americans tho, and not just Native Australians....
