Today, we discovered that the location of the refrigerator was once the original location of the kitchen sink! That means all the main plumbing was behind/beneath the fridge. Thankfully, we don't have to relocate the plumbing for the new fridge, but it will set farther out from the wall than expected. I'm more glad than ever we chose a counter- ( Read more... )

Ugh that'll be fun.

Is it Jerry rigging or jury rigging? Too tired to look it up.

From what I can tell, jerry-rigged is the original term which was first used in 1959 meaning something made quickly and carelessly. The Urban Dictionary's entry grants origin to WWII and the pejorative term 'jerry' for German, but Mirriam-Webster says date of common usage was 1959. I imagine the term came into use by Allied soldiers in WWII, but not into acceptable use until it spread to the general population in the 50's.

I did notice Urban Dictionary link it with jury-rigged, but there was no definition or specific entry for jury-rigged, nor was it defined anywhere else. I think it's similiar to 'another thing coming' v 'another think coming' where the original, and correct, phrase is 'another think' but common, regional usage has slurred the meaning into a separate, less explicable phrase.

Ayiyi, nothing is ever simple, is it?

That said, I'm so happy you're getting a new kitchen!

Jerry-rigging is not on, deffo, but jury-rigging is still a most useful phrase that I picked up from Patrick O'Brian. I can't use all of the colorful nautical jargon from his books (well, unless I'm writing PotC fic), but some of the phrases jump out because they're still in such common use removed from seafaring context.

Oh, nice. I'll definitely substitute jury-rigged for jerry-rigged in future. ::hugs::

New Kitchen: Phase One will be complete in about a week (we're waiting for the components of the island to arrive, but that's something we'll build ourselves.) I'm really excited to live with it for a time to see how it goes.
