It looks like a scene from a postcard.
A parade of cherry blossom trees line along a small footpath. The ground was a velvet carpet of petals. Streaks of sunlight shone right through the gaps of the leaves creating puddles of light on a sea of pink. The breeze hummed a melodious tune and the branches danced in harmony sending a shower of pale crimson to the ground. The footpath winds along the trees unto a small pond. Before the pond stands a majestic cherry blossom tree, like a conductor leading the parade of smaller trees behind it. Beneath the tree is a wooden bench, its reflection breaking the monotonous painting of a bright blue sky mirrored on the glassy surface of the pond.
It is a quiet place. A sanctuary from all the raucousness of the world.
Donghae rested his neck on the backrest of the wooden bench and closed his eyes, gentle wind blowing softly on his face. He thinks back of everything that has happened for the past weeks.
Falling for Eunhyuk. Catching himself during the fall. Realizing it’s too late.
Avoiding Eunhyuk. Getting hurt in the process. Learning that distance is but another dagger stabbing on his already-wounded heart.
Deep in thought, he didn’t realize another figure standing next to the wooden bench under that cherry blossom tree.
The wind blew again, a bit harder this time. Leaves fell, like little boats of pink floating dreamily on the afternoon sun.
Eunhyuk watched the leaves fall freely on the pond before looking at the younger boy sitting on the wooden bench. His face looking up and his eyes still closed. Eunhyuk took a seat next to him, waking the younger boy from his momentary reflection.
The branches shook as fresh gust of wind passed by.
What happened?
Donghae stared at the blue sky mirrored on the waters and heaved out a sigh.
I’m lost…
Eunhyuk leaned back on the backrest and closed his eyes. The soft rustling of the leaves and their steady breathing are the only sounds heard. I was hurt…
The younger boy looked at the ground beneath his feet. His footprints were ugly marks, crushing delicate petals bedding the soft earth. He felt his eyes moisten and he looked up to prevent the tears from falling.
I’m sorry…
Too late. A teardrop rolled down his cheek and he felt the sting of the afternoon breeze on his wet skin. I never meant to hurt you.
Eunhyuk looked at the younger boy beside him. His eyes gazed into the soft face of the sensitive boy and he saw the marks of many sleepless, sorrowful nights.
I know.
He moved in closer. His hand searched for the younger boy’s hand. He held Donghae’s hands and interlocked his fingers on his.
Another set of tears fell from the younger boy’s eyes; but these tears were different from the one he shed a while ago. He wiped the tears away and looked at the older boy’s face.
I love you.
A passing breeze lifted some of the dirt-trodden petals off the earth and let them fell on the pond. Eunhyuk looked at the falling leaves of the cherry blossom tree and looked back at the younger boy beside him. He gave out a smile and squeezed his hand.
I love you, too.
