Title: The Place Where I Feel Most Like Me
Pairing: Sooyoung/Jessica
Rating: G
Genre: Friendship, Drama
The fireworks smear a palette of colors in the sky and Sooyoung thinks they look a thousand times better mirrored in Sica’s eyes.
It's been years of staring at the sky on New Year's eve with the rest of the world merry-making beneath them and it makes her happy seeing that every year, Sica's eyes glow brighter than that of the passing year's date of becoming.
Sometimes she likes to think what might have happened had the older girl gave up and went back to the States. She will probably be in a university; studying something related to fashion or maybe literature. She is a learner; very smart and she likes books a lot. She might be traveling all over the world; backpacking through Europe, meeting people in Southeast Asia; partying in the Americas. Sooyoung knows how she has this certain itching in her shoes; a wanderlust with a thirst for everything new. Or she will probably be back in their hometown; holding hands with a man she has fallen in love with. Laughing and talking and snuggling on park benches under a lazy afternoon sky.
Sooyoung can’t help thinking about what life is for Sica had she chose to stay far from Korea. They will still be friends and they will still meet, and Sica will have none of the pain she had gone through. None of the seven years of toil, sweat, and hardship; tears on her shoulders; crossed fingers for hopes of debuting. None of the dirty rumors; hidden relationships; secret smiles and anniversary dates behind closed doors. None of calloused feet; four-hour trips from Korea to Japan to Korea; constant need to look good for the public; fake smiles and forced laughter.
“Stop staring.”
Jessica voices out with her laughter ending the sentence. She looks at the younger girl and punches her lightly on the shoulder. The latter says nothing and shifts her attention back to the well-lit sky.
The clock strikes twelve and the fireworks display starts. Downstairs, the rest of the girls are finishing what’s left of the New Year Eve feast. Jessica looks at Sooyoung and a warm smile spreads on her face.
Sometimes, she likes to think what might have happened had she given up and went back to the States. An ordinary girl living an ordinary life. It means less of the drama but none of pink seas; loud squeals; four years with Donghae; warm hugs; tears of happiness; sisterhood with eight girls; car for umma and appa; and ten years of beautiful friendship with this girl beside her.
The first set of fireworks are dying now but Sooyoung is still looking up. Jessica places her hand gently on top of hers and leans her head towards the younger girl. The rest of the girls arrive and scatter all over the rooftop; their laughter floating in the evening air.
Another year, another milestone.
She doesn’t know what surprises the New Year may bring but with her best friends on her side and the rest of the world backing her up, in this barren rooftop under a cloudless sky, she wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
