All of my life aside I wanted to just lay out some "political things" for once. I recently found out that Arashi's Sakurai Sho is going to be main newscaster for his news station during the Olympics this summer and then some people were talking about how they are boycotting the Olympics because of China's abuse to human rights in Tibet and ( Read more... )

I was quite shocked that Hillary made that comment b/c even though she's not my favorite person, I always thought that she was at least a good businesswoman. And encouraging a boycott of the Olympics is not a smart move given the fact that we do so much business with China. I might be missing something but I'm not quite sure the Darfur connection is strong enough to warrant a boycott in the first place... I mean, if the Olympics were being held in Sudan, it might make a little more sense...

But regardless, you're right: the Olympics aren't supposed to be political; they're supposed to the one thing the entire world comes together on to celebrate the hardworking athletes that worked their butts off to get there.

The "political issue" that is casuing all the protests is China's treatment of Tibet. From what I gather, China ia basically trying to wipe out the tibetan culture completely and take it over as part of China. I think trying to wipe out any indigenous culture is a human rights issue. But I do think that it's silly to boycott something like the Olypmics. If we wanted to make a real impact on their gov't decisions, we would boycott their economy. That's non-violent, and it actually affects their polititians into having to make a change. China doesn't care if we have any Olympic related boycotts, it doesn't have a big effect on them. It's just a bunch of show to make us look like we care about human rights without actually having to give up any of our luxuries by boycotting Chinese made items.
