I am still a little confused as to what "BNF" means. "BNF" stands for "Big Name Fan" who is someone well-known in fandom for fic, art, meta, etc. So who is considered a BNF? Does this mean that Koide Mieko, Kodaka Kazuma, and Nabako Kamo are not considered BNF's because they are famous for their work as professional manga artists rather than fandom ( Read more... )

When I think of BNFs, I think of people on LJ or other internet sites. If they leave the internet to move on and become pro (or were never online to begin with) they're not BNFs anymore; they're Authors or Artists or whatever, with a capital letter.

BNFs are people within the fan community -- people on LJ, etc. The definition of what makes someone a BNF is very fuzzy and there's no rule you can apply, other than if enough people say someone is a BNF, then they are. It's a combination of popularity and influence, I think.

It's a bit of a loaded term, actually. Maybe it describes that magical state of popularity where some people automatically dislike the fan simply because they are popular. :)
