I realize this movie has been vidded to death. I just felt like being indulgent. The vid came together very quickly, although I unfortunately ran into some tech issues during encoding that delayed its release. But it's out now, so that's neither here nor there.
Although I do touch on the canon narrative, the main focus from 1:07 onwards is on the film's stunning action sequences. A lot of FFVII vids prefer to maintain the action's original flow, which is an understandable choice given the nature of the source material. Others go for a more abrupt and choppy style of cutting to keep things visually unpredictable. I didn't want to go either of those routes, so my main goal was to find a way to maintain a decent overarching visual flow while still cutting the hell out of the action sequences. I wish I could come up with some intelligent-sounding explanation for how I went about doing that, but in the end it was mostly instinct complemented by a healthy dose of experimentation.
One technique used much more here than in my other vids involves tacking the beginning of one movement onto the end of another in order to blend different sequences within the same scene. I figured that as long as I was being indulgent, I might as well exploit the money shots for all they were worth. If I needed to mush them together in order to do that, so be it.
