You know I'm going to have to say the obvious ones... Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Herbie Hancock, Ike Turner... but you might not know Michael Brecker, Victor Wooten, Tord Gustavsen Trio, Steve Bailey, Frank Mantooth, Galactic, St. Germain.
If you like lucious bass lines, Victor Wooten is your man. Galactic and St. Germain are more club jazz, but St. Germain is more than worth your money. Michael Brecker is probably the best saxophone player alive today, and Tord Gustavsen Trio puts out some great stuff. However, a new album I downloaded from iTunes (Six Degrees 100) has an amazingly well done jazz piece by dZihan & Kamien (though the rest of the album goes in an out of all genres as it's a world compilation).
For ragtime, Ben's right on target with Scott Joplin. Also check out Joseph Lamb, Muriel Polluck, Harry Jentes, Artie Matthews, Guido Neilsen, Bryan Wright (covers a lot of work of Joplin, Lamb, Polluck).
