Over dinner tonight I heard about this AIDS awareness ad campaign here in California that features people having sex with poisonous animals, like giant scorpions and black widows. I was immediately horrified--the obvious implication is that negative people having sex with positive people is the equivalent of humans having sex with monsters, right? It's some of the most fucked up dehumanizing bullshit I've heard of. One of the people at dinner was trying to explain that the ad is saying that having sex without a condom is dangerous like having sex with a poisonous animal is dangerous, not that people with HIV are like poisonous animals, but when you replace the image of a human with the image of a gigantic poisonous animal, well... I guess I don't know what else to say. But I am disgusted. Also, a bit drunk.
