fic: Trouble Pt. 2 (girl!kirk)

Nov 16, 2010 17:53

this is the continuation from the Bar Scene.

"You met a guy?" Winona was her normal skeptical self, and Jem sighed, sitting down at the table and snatching an apple from the bowl.

"Yeah, from Starfleet. Said his name was Pike."

"Christopher Pike?" She looked up and almost missed the stricken expression on Winona's face.

"Probably, why? What's wrong?"

"You remember that guy that came by the house awhile back to ask about the Kelvin?"

"The one that wrote the dissertation? You mean that's the same guy?" She took a bite, trying to reconcile the image of the stern, hard man with the eager young Lieutenant from her twelfth birthday. It wasn't gelling, but then again, she had only been 12 when the guy came by the first time, so her memories could be playing tricks on her.

"Yeah. I knew Chris a little, when I was at the Academy, teaching, so he came by the house instead of going through John."

"Well, he asked me to join Starfleet." She waited for her mother to protest, to say anything, and was surprised when she heard nothing. She looked up to see an expression on her face that she didn't understand. "Well? Aren't you going to say anything?"

"Sweety, this just might be the break you've been waiting for. You can be an officer in 4 years, have your own ship in 8. I know I've had a lot of bad things to say about Starfleet over the years, but it really is a stable place to be. And you need some stability. I know I haven't been the mother you needed me to be, but now I'm going to try. You should take it."

"First Steve, now you!"

"Why don't you think on it for a little while? What's your time limit?"

"Shuttle leaves at 0800."

'And it's only midnight. Plenty of time. Just think about it, baby. I'll love you no matter what you choose. Also, I would change out of the bar-crawl clothes either way. That corset can't be good for your rib." She made a face at Winona but went up to her room, wrapping her ribs with her collection of gauze before throwing on a t-shirt and a slightly looser pair of jeans. She changed out her pointy heels for her much more sensible and easy to ride in boots.

When she clatttered down the stairs again, Winona held out one of the house comms. "Call me when you figure it out?"

"Of course." She tucked it away and ran outside, jumping on her bike and roaring off into the Iowa night.

She ran out of road at about 4, at least that was when she had to turn around or risk being late for the shuttle. It seemed her subconscious had made the decision for her. She pulled up about 10 miles away from the Shipyard, staring up at the elegant skeleton of the Enterprise rising over the Iowa fields. She sat there, watching the sun rise behind it, wreathing it in flames of orange and gold. it was almost an out-of-body experience, and a part of her wanted to see that ship completed, be there for it's maiden voyage, from the inside.

She pulled up to the shuttle a few minutes before 8, and saw Pike standing outside, waiting, as if he'd known she was going to be there. It irked her a little, but she let it go, swinging off of her bike and passing her keys off to some random yard worker who was admiring it. Before she walked up to pike, she sent Winona a message.

"To the Stars, Mom. See you in the black."

"My mom said 4 years," she said conversationally as she reached Pike. "I'm gonna do it in 3." She stepped into the shuttle, and on to her new life, whatever that would be.

She hadn't counted on being seated next to the most paranoid doctor in the universe, though.

Part 2 of Trouble is finally finished! The next one will be the meeting of Bones, but that might not be up until tomorrow.
