So I've been reading about feminist criticism of Hamlet for my Lit Studies class. But what I'm interested in isn't so much the Hamlet stuff itself (although I'm sure we can all ruminate on Ophelia until the cows come home). What I'd really like to know more about is this ( Read more... )

Having read a few slash stories by male writers, I've been surprised at how sentimental/romantic some of them are - more so than some written by women. Also, by how often men cry in them.
I've had it said that men cry more often in slash written by women than they do in that written by men, or than they do in real life, but I honestly think it just comes down to the individual.
I've seen just as many men cry in RL as women, if not more.
Maybe some women prefer to believe that men are less emotional, but I don't believe that it's so, and I don't think I can usually tell if a man or a woman has written stuff.

This is not to say that we should swallow society stereotypes concerning gender but to remove gender touchstones or references from writing is not only problematic, it isn't even a laudable goal.

Good point. We don't need to perpetrate stereotypes, but ignoring gender differences would make this world a less rich place.

try "The Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency" Books by Alexander McCall Smith

::writes down:: :)

That's a really good point about writing reflecting reality. I suppose androgynous writing would be pretty boring, if nothing else.

Thanks for your input! :)
