ConCarolinas '10 Recap

Jun 09, 2010 00:38

The Con was EPIC. EPIC, I TELLS YOU.

This is mah BFF, kirihana527. In front of a sign that’s in the town I work in. We parked at the McDonald’s that was about a block away and hiked up to it to get the pic.

We got to the con area about 2-3 hours before the registration even OPENED, so we passed the time in nearby shops. I had to get a pic with the creepy mannequins at Old Navy.

While we were waiting in line to get the wife-thing’s badge (I pre-ordered mine, so I didn’t have to wait), this guy on security kept talking to us. The first of several adoring “fans” (and by fans, I mean people who were amused/amazed by the fact that there were two young women in Star Trek costumes). :D

Here we are with Keela, the Klingon in charge of Klingon Karaoke on Friday and Saturday. She was awesome and challenged us to come to karaoke and make the Federation proud. Later, we gave her a Party Boldly visor and she promised to pick on us that night. After we performed (after we changed into our mirror universe costumes- sorry, no pics of them) “Be Prepared” from the Lion King, she kept us up front for a minute so she could tell everyone how proud it made her to see the next generation of Trek fans. :) Our performance even garnered a good amount of applause and a guy found us the next day to tell us that our’s was his favorite performance that night.

And here we are with John Broughton, who plays Captain Carter in the Star Trek Farragut series. He was so sweet and nice and we promised to spread word of the Farragut fanproject. Click here should to go to their website. (Also, he’s supposed to be blogging about us whenever he updates his blog again. :D)

We dubbed the red mulch outside the hotel the “Mulch of Vulcan”. It’s not as glitter-y as the sands of Vulcan, but, hey, it grows trees and stuff.

BILL BLAIR: THE FRIDAY EDITION-

This guy here has played, like, 50 bajillion background aliens and misc. characters on several different shows (including the last three series of Star Trek). He’s an absolute sweetheart. He was sure to maintain eyecontact with everyone in the audience for at least a minute. I got more because I was taking pictures. ;D

Also, he managed to embarrass the hell out of me. I made a comment about how much I liked his shirt (it was shimmery!) and he said, and I quote, “Aww thanks. But you can’t have it… Unless you want what’s underneath as well.” I turned several shades of red.

Other fun stuff from Friday:
*The wifey bought a button from the dealer’s room that said “Captain, please. Not in front of the Klingons.”

*While hanging out at the Starfleet table, some guys pulled us aside because they were participating in a scavenger hunt and needed people in Star Trek costumes. They wanted double points due to us being women. We also had a guy stop us to get a photo on his cell phone because he wanted to tweet about us. We obliged.

*The wifey also got a hug from Bill Blair. Why? Because he was at the Farragut table when we walked up (for like the third time XD) and he told her it was okay to break character because we were at a convention. That’s when we decided Bill Blair was awesome and we had to go to his panel.

*We went to the “Shat Attack” double feature. The Shat movies played were Kingdom of Spiders and Incubus. Everyone in the room began to MST3K them both. It was pretty damn awesome.

*We skipped out on the Time Traveler’s Ball to stay at Klingon Karaoke because it was a lot more fun. One guy did a fabulous rendention of Shatner’s take on Rocket Man. I also did Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5” sometime around midnight.

*We went to the midnight showing of Repo! the Genetic Opera and fought to stay awake. I fell asleep about halfway through and woke up before the finale. XD

SATURDAY:

We decided to go as Light and L from Death Note on Saturday.

BILL BLAIR: THE SATURDAY EDITION-

From Bill Blair’s make-up demo. He’s just such an adorable man. :) Also there was Brian Holloway, who works on Star Trek Phase II.

OTHER AWESOME COSPLAYERS:

Other fun stuff from Saturday:
*We met a photographer who was amazed to see Death Note cosplayers at a Sci-Fi con. He talked to us several times during the day and asked us to do a mini-photoshoot before the night was over.

*We hung out with author Rob V Aldrich for about 30-45 minutes in between panels because he literally pulled us to the side since he was bored and we were dressed up like Death Note characters. He remembered us from the previous night at Shat Attack (he had called for a end on Trek references before KoS was over, but we kept making them). He thought me and the bff were a couple after I poked her and said “Oh you know you love me” after I said something stupid. XD

*The wifey got third place in Harry Potter trivia and won a Hippogriff plushie.

*We decided not to do the Zombification/Zombie Walk as it interfered with some of our other plans and we weren’t sure if we’d be allergic to the make-up or not. But it was all good.

*We attended Whedonmania where we watched/sang along with Dr. Horrible and BtVS’s Once more With Feeling with a room full of people. It was amazing.

*We only got to watch about half of the live action Death Note movie because we told Rob we were going to be at his panel “Fan Fiction: The Slash Hour”. He crowned me “King of the Nerds” because I admitted that Kirk/Spock was my current fave pairing, I was dressed as an anime character, and when he said something along the lines of “if you want to write a fic about Worf bending Picard over the command chair and having his way with him, I won’t judge you” I responded with a “Well I know what I’m writing tonight!”. The panel wasn’t just about slash, but fanfics in general and quickly devolved into a goofy, laid-back discussion about anything and everything. We stayed for the following panel on “Sex and the Supernatural” because Rob stayed as an extra panelist and we knew it’d be interesting.

*We popped into Klingon Karaoke for a little before the midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

*Before TRHPS started, Bill Blair sat beside us and talked with us after the photographer we befriended earlier that day told him that we wouldn’t bite. Photographer guy said “Well, I know that one *points at BFF* won’t, but I’m not sure about this one *points at me*.” Bill laughed and said, “She won’t either. She’ll just blush a lot.”, referencing to how red I turned the previous day. I turned red again.

SUNDAY:

No pics, because things were dying down and we were in our “Pokemon Trainer” costumes (essentially regular clothes plus hats and scarves; I was carrying my Torchic plushie and the wifey was carrying my Pichu plushie).

*We made it to the last half of Bill Blair’s panel since we had nothing better to do until noon. He greeted us when we came in and asked us how we liked RHPS. :D

*We had a couple people comment on how different we looked in our street clothes. XD

*The Star Trek panel was interesting. It was hosted by Brian Holloway and we talked about our opinions of the new movie and what we wanted to see in the next one. We all pretty much agreed that we wouldn’t really want them to redo Khan, but Harry Mudd might be interesting to see.

*Before attending our next two panels, we popped into the Dealer’s Room to find Bill so we could give him a Party Boldly visor and tell him what a pleasure it had been to meet him. He told us that he’s expecting to see us again the next time he comes through the area.

THE SWAG:

*Star Trek Fotonovels #1, 2, 3, 5, 6, & 8

*The Klingon Dictionary

*Trek or Treat (which is a book of ridiculous captions to random screenshots. I’ll be posting scans of it later.)

*Mr. Scott’s Guide to the Enterprise (I literally squee’d when I found it.)

*All four DVDs that Farragut Films has released. They aren’t allowed to sell them, so we gave them a small donation in exchange.

*Three Trek puzzles (including my favorite Trek puzzle… the one with a half-naked Kirk on it)

*Spock christmas cards (They make me giggle so much.)

And the best find:

*A KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!! action figure. He’s most likely not going to stay in his box for long.

Overall, ConCarolinas was AMAZING. I’m totes glad that I went and am already planning on attending next year.

concarolinas, death note, star trek, cosplay, the wife-thing, doctor who, out of my vulcan mind, bill blair is amazing
