CHARACTER

Name: Mladen “Mlenar” Ivanov
Series: n/a
Canon: n/a
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Profession: Drug Trafficker

History:

Mlenar was never one who wished to bear the heavy burden of responsibility; he was merely content with working off screen in the shadows, living out his life the way he wanted like any carefree boy would. A happy child at heart, one with a knack for pranks and a naturally playful nature, Mlenar’s life was significantly carefree and he was content, that was, until the abrupt death of both his parents; his father, a big-shot gangster with ties to the Russian mafia, and his mother, a quiet girl from Slovenia.

It was in the dead of night when the tragedy happened. Rivals from a neighboring gang had been plotting to off Mlenar’s father for months, annoyed with how the man had become friends with a high ranking mafia member. Fearful that he would become too powerful because of this connection, Mlenar’s father was murdered, along with his mother, Mlenar a witness to the brutal act. The killing was quick, although bloody, and in protecting him his mother was slaughtered, her dead body falling onto his own, coated with red. Ever since then, Mlenar hasn’t been able to stand the sight of blood. Mlenar’s older brother Aleksy thankfully, had been out at the time, and when he returned he quickly grabbed his brother and ran.

Not wanting either of them to get caught up in the fray the two ran as far as they could, hiding out for a period of time on a stretch of unused farmland on the countryside. In order to protect Mlenar, Aleksy found the courage to seek out the man his father had ties with, eventually finding him through a stroke of luck at a secluded bar on the off skirts of town. Whatever Aleksy offered or agreed to do in exchange for two tickets to America, Mlenar would never find out, for instead of finding his brother beside him when he awoke, it was a small envelope with a ticket inside, along with instructions and a threat to inquire no further about the matter. According to the letter, his brother would follow shortly after, on the next boat over to America.

Unable to look for his brother for fear that the threat would be followed through, Mlenar hastily made his way to the harbor, boarding the boat like he’d been told to with the promise of meeting up with a person named Ines. After hours of sea sickness the boat finally pulled into New York Harbor, and a very disoriented Mlenar clambered off the boat. In a foreign land, unable to speak English aside from a few minor words, he was completely vulnerable.

Unsure of what ‘Ines’ looked like, he finally clued in when he spotted, much to his displeasure, ‘Mladen Ivanov’ written on a cardboard sign, held up by a fairly tall, plain looking girl with short black hair, pink streaks highlighting her bangs. Only understanding the word ‘come’ simply because of the hand gesture she made with a smile, he followed her back to a sleek black Jaguar, climbing in the back with only a hint of hesitation. Eventually, Mlenar found himself back at what he presumed was a base, and was informed, rather matter-of-factly, that his brother would not be coming.

Confused, infuriated, and heartbroken, he refused to communicate or eat, laying in bed with the only possession his brother had owned before this whole mess - a singular Beretta 92FS. Weeks past, and eventually he managed to pull himself together, finally eating when Ines seemed like she’d cry if he didn’t. Once he scarfed down the last bit of bread and soup he’d been offered, in terrible, broken Russian, Ines informed him that he’d be learning English.

It was hard to master at first, taking him ages to wrap his head around sentence structure and all the various verb tenses of the English language, but he finally did. And once the language barrier had been broken, he was able to build a bridge between Ines and Dario, who he later found out were the daughter and son of the mobster who had taken him in. Indebted to them, he agreed to work with them.

A young man named Matt came to work with Ines and in turn, Mlenar ended up having to work with him as well. He was an odd person for sure, but not all that bad on the outside. But Mlenar’s interests didn’t lie so much with Matt, as with the person he brought with him, a disgruntled Irish boy named Torin. Knowing what it was like first hand to be put in such an awkward situation, Mlenar tried to befriend Torin, which although was hard at first, he finally succeeded in doing so, tempting the boy with cherry lollipops.

Before Torin had arrived on the scene Mlenar was still quite introverted in comparison to how he originally was before the death of his brother and parents, even around people he was comfortable with like Ines and Dario. There would be however the odd time here and there that he’d feel the urge to do something fun or trick Dario into slipping on rotten banana peels in the hall. There were laughs of course, but they were never truly felt. Being the youngest individual made him yearn for the comfort he’d found in his older brother, even if Ines and Dario were nice enough. Unable to fill this empty void, it was only when Torin was introduced to their little, odd family, that Mlenar was able to become more lighthearted.

Things didn’t start off all peachy keen between the two of them. In fact, Torin was wary of Mlenar’s intentions. There was something odd about the Russian boy trying to befriend him, especially without any hidden intentions. In actuality, not even Mlenar could describe why he did it. Perhaps it was the look of loss he recognized in Torin that caused him to go out of his way to become the blond’s friend. Either way, he became attached to the smaller boy, taking upon himself the role of the boy’s surrogate older brother, even though Torin had told him quite bluntly, he had enough siblings already.

Each rejection from Torin caused him to work harder until finally, the two ended up getting into a fight. It was only after a lot of yelling, and mutual outbursts of their personal losses, in Mlenar’s case, the loss of his brother, that the gap Mlenar had been trying to build a bridge across finally closed. An understanding was found within one another and one another’s losses. Finding someone who understood what it was like to lose someone meaning the world to them was a relief and helped Mlenar come to terms with his brother’s death. Of course, it hurt, but the wound that had been inflicted years ago finally began to heal.

Partners ever since that night, the two were about to start a new assignment, having finished stocking up on cherry lollipops and that’s when the dizziness started to kick in…

Personality:

Originally a playful, childish and curious individual, ever since his brother’s death Mlenar has been unwilling to open up to anyone unless they pique his interest. Usually reserved, Mlenar isn’t one that’s bound to politeness, feeling no remorse if he’s blunt and rude. Having grown up dependent on those around him and living a rather comfortable life before the death of his parents, Mlenar is scared of being independent. If anything, the shock of his brother’s death and the fact he had no one to fall back on in the cruel world caused him to ironically not accept the independence being thrust upon him, but instead, caused him to embrace a childlike attitude and inevitably hinder his growth as an individual. Even though he has no shame acting as such, he does secretly hate the fact he’s not independent enough to get by without clinging to someone.

In an ironic twist, Mlenar’s real name - Mladen - means “Young” and he refuses to tell anyone his real name simply because of its definition. Despite his behavior, he hates the fact that his name labels him as such; no one should be tied down by a label after all.

Although his past is soaked in blood, he can be at times lighthearted, a flamboyant prankster at best, although this side isn’t displayed to those he hasn’t placed complete trust in. Childish, almost embarrassingly so, Mlenar doesn’t mind acting cute or stubborn if it’ll get him what he wants - but that is all it is, an act. He’s learned that people will give into him if he acts as such and he’ll get his wants fulfilled. In fact, aside from snarky amusement, in the very much same way a child would find killing ants with a magnifying glass funny, his true laughter is usually saved and shared with Torin, even if the Irish boy finds him annoying most of the time.

Although he’s come to terms with his brother’s death since finding a companion in Torin, the feeling of loss, although softened, still remains. Whether it’s a way to continue to fill the void left by his older brother or not, it’s not uncommon for Mlenar to become attached to certain individuals, like he did Torin, especially if he deems them cute or if they’re simply younger than him, feeling a need to dote on them. He has a weakness when it comes to the mention of death about those he holds dear and will avoid it at any cost, becoming angry if the matter persists or the person in question continues to dig into his past.

He has quite the obsession with handguns and weaponry, his gun of choice being a Beretta 92FS. The obsession stems from his brother and the specific gun he has was his brother’s. It’s like his baby, carried with him at all times, even when he sleeps - a direct and physical remembrance of his deceased brother. It is the only tie to his past that still remains and without it, he wouldn’t know what to do with himself. It’s as much a part of himself as an individual as it is a memory of Aleksy.

Mlenar is also quite selfish at times, becoming irate if things don’t go his way. He’s not entirely self-centered at heart however. If anything, his brother’s death taught him the meaning of self-sacrifice, and as such, for the very few individuals in his life that he cares about deeply he’d do anything for, include risk his life if the situation called for it.

Almost ironically so, Mlenar suffers from hemophobia to a certain degree, and at the sight of blood he becomes panicked. This is due to having his mother’s bloody corpse fall atop of him when he was young. The sight, color and smell of blood sends him into a tizzy and if not calmed down, he can run the risk of hyperventilating into a state of immense shock. Of course, the amount of blood present determines the severity of his reaction.

Third-Person Sample:

"Hey Mlenar?" Torin’s words were clear as he turned back to glance at him. "Think we could stop by the sweet shop for a second?"

Mlenar’s look of surprise turned to one of elation, as he swiftly bolted from his spot on the couch up to lean towards Torin on the couch across from him. “Of course! Yeah! Let’s go!” Extending a hand, the older boy waited for the blonde, who reluctantly took his own hand and allowed him to help him up.

Torin asking to go anywhere with him made him happy, actually. It was kind of a routine for them to go to the sweets shop after Torin ran out of his favorite treat. He went through lollipops like he was an addict, but Mlenar could care less of how much of his cash he was wasting. If Torin asked for diamonds he’d get him those too!

“I’ll get you two whole boxes this time, like an after-assignment present!” He chimed happily, throwing out his arms as the two of them walked down the trashy streets of Manhattan. He just hoped Matt didn’t come barreling down the streets on his motorcycle to sweep Torin off his feet like he usually did.

It made him pout just thinking about it.

The smile that was usually permanently plastered to his face when Torin was around began to falter as he suddenly became very, very dizzy, balancing himself up against a brick wall. Something wasn’t right…

First-Person Sample Journal Post:

That Kyou guy doesn’t seem so bad, maybe like a more serious version of Matt, I guess… I’m not entirely sure where the hell this is, but I’d better not be alone.

You hear me? Matt? You bastard this better not be your fault! You better not have taken my Tori-cakes all for yourself!!

Tori-cakes? You’re here too right? I don’t know where you are but I'm coming over--you need a gun too? No wait--I'll protect you!
