I'm scared of knives. Sometimes, when I'm in the kitchen with Brian and he's chopping something, I get an image of ripping, tearing, slashing at me. Or when I'm using one myself, I have this irrational fear it's going to twist in my hand suddenly, and let blood...
Who knows why you're scared of radiators? The point is, you are. If they mildly bothered you, then yeah, we'd tease and it would be funny. But it's more than that, and a pox on anyone who would blow it off and dismiss it becausae it's odd.
I've never had a radiator in the places I've lived, but I've accidentally touched one and had it burn the hell out of my hand. I'd fear anything that was out in the open in my home that could burn me!
I have what many people think of as a completely irrational and ridiculous fear. I am absolutely deathly petrified of anyone touching my wrists. Even to just type that out has them itching and burning, and my entire body starting to shake. It's awful. If someone so much as brushes their finger across one of them, I feel like I am losing all control. I feel like I have to run and scream and cry and beat myself against something until it stops. All over a simple, harmless body part. I could never ever imagine wearing a watch or a bracelet!
The point is that it doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense or it seems silly to some people. It's real and it's important that it be recognized as such. People have a tendency to want to mess with you when they think you should just "get over" something so "simple" but it never is that easy and more people need to believe it and be sensitive.
Agreeing with all the people that are saying that real fear isn't funny.
Phobias don't make sense - that's the whole point. Someone fearing spiders or knives or even airplanes isn't rational - just talked about more. It makes me angry to hear that people have mocked you - unless that person has no fear at all they are a hypocrite and there is nothing in this world I hate more than one of those.
As for getting over it there are several different techniques you could try - it depends on how much it impacts your day to day existence. The first step would be writing more about it at the same time other positive things are happening.
