Alzheimer's = Type 3 diabetesThat's lovely news, then. That means the three main remains of my family all have diabetes. I have type 1, my mother is pre-type 2, and my grandma has Alzheimer's (or some kind of dementia, anyway). 1, 2, 3. Yikes ( Read more... )

I love your icon. And I agree- "living with a disease" has become romanticized into this crazy thing.

Also, media=grrr!

You're the third person in about a month to tell me how wonderful my 2 year old icon is! (Not that I don't think it's terrific. If I didn't, I wouldn't have made it.) The words aren't mine, they're Jeremy Hardy's. I just happen to think they're brilliant.

Yeah, if you want serious "living with a disease = wow look at me" stuff, try the recent stories about people who WANT to get AIDS so they can brag about it or whatever. Sick sick sick.

I hadn't heard about THAT! I'm so very disturbed now.

Look, article + amazingly appropriate comment from the loser doing it!
Yes, it's four years old, but I have seen more recent ones...

Bravo! Great Entry and a wonderful rant.

Thanks for the link for the Alzhemier's and type 3. I hadn't known about that.

You have had to deal with something that I only knew about as a kid because a)my mother taught nursing and worked at the children's hospital and b) because one of my playmates had type 1 and my house was one of the few her mother felt comfortable to allow her to sleep over since my mother was a nurse (which I didn't figure out until I was in my mid 20s but my friend always knew). I can remember my friend having to answers all kinds of questions about Diabetes from kids who came up with the strangest ideas of what was going to happen to her if she smelled chocolate (not kidding. Really happened).

You seem to be handling it well and I wish you all the best

Thanks! :)

Yeah, the Alzabetes (if you will) link was the first time I saw that. Scary and bizarrely intriguing (for those that have one or both in the family) at the same time.

My mother has always been the same way... nurse, doctor, or other educated health person = safety. Of course, no one ever invited me to sleep over anywhere, so she didn't have to worry about that, but being at someone's house for a few hours, or being taken to lunch or dinner, yep.

Thanks again for the good wishes and back atcha. :)

I need to correct you- Type II is not always preventable. Unfortunately, it is a common problem among people with certain other auto-immune diseases, and the activation of one often leads to the activation of the other. So, people with things like Celiac/Sprue, Lupus, and several other similar illnesses may develop Type-II DM without being overweight, having poor diets, etc.

OK... not always. My main thing is that when people hear the word "diabetes," they think "fat moron who eats shit" and either don't know WHAT Type 1 is, or know nothing about what causes it and lump it in with the rest. It's still MORE preventable than Type 1...

Oh, you're totally right about the assumption. Imagine what it's like to be a round non-moron with Type II DM and have everyone assume that you eat like a cow or wouldn't have it, when in fact, you eat an incredibly sensible diet. I'm disgusted, frankly, by what I see most people- including a ton of thin ones- eat at potlucks and buffets. I'll go to the Chinese Buffet and have one plate of food with a lot of veggies on it and very little fried stuff. As I sit there, I'll watch others going back for their fourth or fifth plate, and that's before they hit the dessert bar.

THAT'S where the prevention part comes in. ;)

What kind does Adam Morrison have? I'm guessing Type 1. And if a guy can play in the NBA, then he should be a role model for kids...

Good post.

Looked him up. He's my age (anything under 30 works, really) and in good enough shape to play in the NBA = VERY unlikely to be Type 2.

Thanks. :)
