A Question of Climate

I learned to be honest
the way I learned to swim
dropped into the inevitable
my father's thumbs in my hairless armpits
about to give way
I am trying
to surface carefully
remembering
the water's shadow-legged musk
cannons of salt exploding
my nostrils' rage
and for years
my powerful breast stroke
was a declaration of war.

I just talked with a woman that works in the Harvard offices... She's actually the sister of of a woman that works directly with me. We started out just talking about nothing really, and then we started talking about everything... childhoods, being a woman, jobs, hard times, etc. And it was so refreshing and pleasing to talk to her. So, at work today I've been scanning business cards from various scholars of Asia who visit the Institute. Because they've equiped me with a scanner, i've been scanning things around the office on my break. I love scanners, mostly because I like all kinds of print material, and scanners allow you to save all that print ( Read more... )

So, this place that I'm working at in Boston, the Harvard-Yenching Institute...they give research grants to scholars from East and Southeast Asia. Every Labor Day we take the newly arrived scholars and their families on a Boston Duck Tour and then to a really good seafood restaurant in downtown. Well, if feels like fall around here. Rainy, cool, jacket-weather... My last day at the Licks is today, so no more free ice cream for me, which isn't really such a bad thing. Believe it or not, I'm kind of ice-creamed out. My folks and I went whale watching while they visited, and while it was rainy, it was an awesome whale day.
