If it's about the sake for people being too many - yes. There are already too many to just quit technology and tell them to go back to a natural lifestyle. (Where animals left, humans came.) In nature, humans wouldn't even find that much food to feed themselves properly.
The only thing left to fear on this is - some even already speak of science as a religion -, humans rather care about researching how to become immortal than how to reverse their traces in the world. Another fact that adds: Even in industrialized countries they still wish to have a demographic policy as in developing nations, like 200 years ago as 3 out of 10 children born only reached adulthood. This is an essential piece of their economic policy which they don't want to give up to get people to work for lesser and lesser payment every year. Shrinking population to them means a threat.
So they won't make science engage in that, rather they look for inventions which support the way of life that they want their people to live.

I hear you. What to say that won't come out as ranting about humans I don't know. We need technology to thrive, and have since that meant sharpened sticks and embers saved from one fire to start the next.
