I love living in the future

Jul 16, 2012 14:22

Middle of last week I got an email from my friend Jane Garthson, a Toronto filker. She said she and her husband Phil Mills were going to host a housefilk on Saturday, and would I be interested in attending via Skype?

Well, um, yeah.

So I dusted off my Skype account that I hadn't used in over a year, figured out my password and off I went. Connecting ( Read more... )

The Janis Ian song is titled "Welcome Home".

It was written for the Nebulas a couple of years ago.

Part of the reason I knew the song title is that I just listened to it about 15-20 times a few weeks ago... (It was one of the songs on the ConCertino 2012 CD that I published. It was covered by Peggi Warner-Lalonde, with Janis Ian's permission.)

Actually Peggi performed "Welcome Home" at the housefilk. She was also the perpetrator of the alleged Irish spoken word piece.

The peanut butter vodka was actually being passed around by Peggi. And it was surprising good.

It was great to have a west coast filker at a Toronto house filk! Most people hadn't met you, even online, and always love extending their filk family. But I need to hear those songs in person some day.

The technology will improve.

I don't think I'd met anyone there other than you and Phil (and only you in person). Someday I'd love to come out to FilkOntario and meet you all in person. It's probably more likely than seeing many of the group at ConChord.

Every so often I see jobs for Perl programmers in the Toronto area advertised on the net. Just sayin' . . .

FilKONtario really is a wonderful convention, and I'll bet you haven't met Tim and Annie Walker, our GoHs this year. Please come if finances at all permit.

I have no idea how hard or easy it is to immigrate to Canada these days, but suspect a job offer makes it possible. I think it's easier than going the other way.

A recruiter I talked to last year seemed to think that if a company wanted to hire you, they (the company) would work out the immigration details. Certainly I'd want to have a job in hand before I went rather than just pulling up stakes and moving and hoping it'll all work out. Been there, done that, too old to do it again, and that was all inside the US.

My secret plan is to make a ton of money and pay off my bills so I can afford to pick up and go to OVFF or FilkOntario or GaFilk just because I feel like it. OK, maybe it's not such a secret.
