What's the Point?

ohai, gaise. Been a while, sorry 'bout that.

But I'm here again! With banter.

Today, I want to banter about artists who paint work that could have just as easily been achieved with photo-manipulation. What's the damn point of that?
Artists that come immediately to mind are Blackeri, and this guy. Actually--I'm certain both of them are photo ( Read more... )

Maybe they just like the way it looks? Like-- it could be in the real world but it's not. I don't know, they probably have a lot more control painting it than manipulating it.

I doubt it, seeing as most of their images are directly based from photographic references :9 as is the case with any work of that look, really.

I'm rarely in awe of the photo-realistic paintings, unless they're traditionally painted. Some of those classical painters were pretty amazin'. 8c

Janaschi's work is very prettyful agghhhh *drool*

Yeah, to me most of the time photomanips are a definite turnoff, especially if they're passed off as paintings with"reference". Pain in the ass.

Also, lol we're a hive, thinking the same thing. Except manips instead of copying Johnny Depp

Photorealistic things and replicates of photographs have always failed to impress me. There'd be people going "OMG" and "WOW" or "THIS IS YOUR BEST ARTWORK YET" and I'll be like "...yeah, but it's not art."

Which I mean it technically is...but to me, art is creating, not imitating. >_ ( ... )

While I don't doubt the woman can paint well on her own, the vast majority of her works incorporate photographs. It's not a problem when done creatively. It's quite lovely.
Unfortunately, she's actually been caught (beyond reason of doubt) ripping off copyright photographic images. Which is where I draw the line, personally. But since the owners of said infringed copyrights don't actually seem to care, it's not been a terrible issue. There was a huuuuuge amount of drama in the art community over it a few years ago, though.
She's now doing concept work for the His Dark Materials movies. So clearly, her name hasn't been terribly blackened by it in the industry :9 which, I'm not surprised, really.

Wow, well, that's...pretty...yeah...*stares at respect metre as it drains*

I guess if the owners don't mind, it's not so bad, but I make a rule to only use images I have prior permission to use, so...>_>
