-- To cheat; to defraud. Similar in origin to such words as burke, boycott, and bogus. It is now classed as slang in England but for a long period was much used by standard English writers. In America, however, the word is still looked upon as orthodox and is applied to all kinds of fraudulent dealing and deceit.
