aptitude test
What is an Aptitude Test? How does it work?

The Aptitude Test is a yearly assessment taken by every child ready for initiation*

The test is to examine the child's aptitude or the disposition towards one of the five traits of the five factions. It is a good indicator of what faction a child should choose based on his/her predominant characteristic.

The next day in the Choosing Ceremony test-takers must choose which faction they will enter into. They can either leave their family and choose an entirely new faction or they can stay with them. Their aptitude test result is taken into account but the final decision is left up to them.

*depends on the faction (all: not passing will lead to being factionless)

factions
What is a Faction? What are the factions?

The society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue. These are: Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful) and Candor (the honest). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives after taking a placement test.

Abnegation
"I  choose to turn away from my reflection, to rely not on myself but on my brothers and sisters,
to project always outward until I disappear.”
-Abnegation Manifesto

Color: Grey
Rivals with Erudite

Abnegation was formed by those who blamed selfishness for human nature’s errors. The faction values selflessness in the service of others. Common traits of the faction include sitting quietly while waiting and bowing heads to each other as a sign of respect. Gossiping, using the mirror for long periods of time and buying luxury items are forbidden. As Abnegation, the focus of their lives will be in serving others instead of themselves. Anything done for self-enjoyment is thereby discouraged.

Amity
“Give freely, trusting that you will be given what you need... Do not be angry. The opinions of others cannot damage you... The wrong is past. You must let it rest where it lies... You must no longer think cruel thoughts. Cruel thoughts lead to cruel words, and hurt you as much as they hurt their target.”
- Amity Manifesto
Color: Red and/or Yellow
Rivals with Candor

Amity was formed by those who blamed war and violence for human natures' many faults. The faction values peace above else. Common traits of the faction include giving out hugs, laughing and loving music, arts and games. They formed Amity in order to have a peaceful society free from conflict and sadness caused by wars and instigation. They are truly a democratic faction, voting on everything, almost unanimously.

Candor
“Truth makes us transparent. Truth makes us strong. Truth makes us inextricable.”
- Candor Manifesto
Color: Black and White
Rivals with Amity

Candor was formed by those who blamed duplicity and deception, who believed that dishonesty, is the key fault in human nature which began evil and war. The faction values honesty. Common traits of the faction include being honest and trustworthy and being able to read body language to detect lies. Candors are serious about their views on honesty against dishonesty. Some might describe the Candor as being honest to a fault - even, in some cases, so honest as to be insulting.

Dauntless
“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another... We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves. ”
- Dauntless Manifesto
Color: Black
Neutral with all factions

Dauntless was formed by those who blamed cowardice for human nature's faults. The faction values bravery over any other. Common traits of the faction include fighting and enhancing physical skills. They train to fight and use weapons to prepare their bodies to respond to threats and challenges. The faction also emphasizes the idea of freedom from fear, and test this daily by attempting death-defying feats.

Erudite
“'Ignorance is defined not as stupidity but as lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge inevitably leads to lack of understanding.”
- Erudite Manifesto

Color: Blue
Rivals with Abnegation

Erudite was formed by those who blamed human ignorance for the faults of society. The faction values intelligence and wisdom. Common traits of the faction include chatting about books and newspapers and reading and studying in constant pursuit of knowledge. Erudites are expected to delegate themselves in the library reading books, or, most commonly, reading something from the computer. Members are also known to be particularly eloquent.

factionless
What is a Factionless?

There is one more group that is not part of the social classes or factions. These are the factionless. These are the people who failed to complete their initiation into whatever faction they chose and live in poverty, doing the work no one else wants to do. They are the janitors, construction workers and garbage collectors. They are the ones who make fabric, operate trains and drive buses. In return for their work they get food and clothing. They live in places in collapsed roads, empty subways full of trash and sewage. It is later found that they have the highest number of divergent.

divergence
What is a Divergent?

Divergence is the tendency to the diverge from the norm which is, in this case, the mindset and way of thinking the factions are meant for.

They obtain more than one value, namely, bravery, intelligence and selflessness. The Divergents' minds are said to "move in several different directions" and can’t be confined to one way of thinking, meaning they cannot be controlled.
