Generalities.

I have been rather upset for a few days over remarks made to me that related to my general behavior and character. There seems to be little point in taking the time to explain how and why I feel a few of the observations relayed to me  were occasionally incorrect and unjustified if not downright cruel.  I'd rather spend more quality time with ( Read more... )

Well, I am sorry to hear that remarks like that have upset you. I think your mother was right on! And if it is any help at all, on the few times I have met you, I have found both your behaviour and character to be delightful! It is why I seek you out at places where I know we are going to be in the same general area, such as cons, etc. etc. And I will continue to do so! Now that my life is settling down a bit, perhaps I'll even have the luxury of time enough to drive down and see you as well!

I hope your upset goes away soon dear lady!

"onward and upward" is from Brighton Beach Memoirs...i think it's the last line of the play or close to it.

I'm sorry you're having such a time. Don't take anything from anyone else, including their attitude if it is not righly yours to carry. Consider it, if it does not ring true, let it wash off you like rain. And those are good words by ERoosevelt!

'Have A Nice Day - No problem, Dictionary of Clichés' by Christine Ammer (1992)
has "onward and upward" "onwards and upwards" as being a cliche already in the mid 1800's.
my first remembered experience of the phrase is from 'The Last Battle' by C. S. Lewis... followed by "the further up, the further in".

if anything i have said to you led to these feelings, i sincerely apologize. you are among the more wonderful and valuable people i know.

and your mother was, at the very least in this instance, a wise woman.
