If you could just let me know what kind of rates Lee charges, I'm trying to get a feel for things. I am probably going to go with asking whoever has booked getting their own terp but it it is always worth looking around.

I know someone has offered to do some BSL terping, but only for some of the time and I know BSL and SSE are /not/ the same thing.

I have a couple of deaf friends who might know of rates and stuff as well, I have never needed a terp as a) my sign is not yet good enough and b) I generally hear well enough to get by (or take someone with me who can).

London rates are higher than the rest of the country but I would have thought it roughly the same for somewhere like Manchester. Depending on the interpreter, most charge between £150 and about £225 per day plus travel. With agencies, it's that, plus a fee, plus VAT usually. Investigate options like Access To Work if there's any way that they can be milked in order to have it said that the interpreter is needed for something connected to the person's employment and you will be able to recoup at least some of the costs. I would guess Manchester prices are about 10-15% less.

I used to have the number of an interpreter based in Manchester who could probably have helped, but have mislaid it.

Thanks.. I was expecting as much, but there is rather little actually clearly available from my quick search of the web.

I think the person who has requested the terp usually brings a 'friend' who we pay, so this is our most likely option (as the rest is scarily unaffordable)....

Access to Work is a good idea, will look into that, always worth a try.

Thanks for giving me some idea of what to expect, I hope to be doing more 'conference' organising type stuff so having a vague idea of interpreterness and booking is worth knowing.

Thanks
Natalya

Natalya, you could do worse than asking locally - Sheffy City Council offer SSE and BSL terps for meetings etc. with the housing people. They /must/ have a list and they should be able to say how much. What's more, they will probably be local, so Mcr not a problem.

Have a look at this:
