I'll take pictures of the bottom bobbin thing too, to see if anyone has come across something similar. It could just be that it needs oiling as we were playing with it at my mum's house.
No worries re non-comments, I know I don't always comment on stuff I intend to. I will mark all my sewing posts as sewing so that those who know stuff (such as yourself *grin*) will be able to spot them amongst the other usual crap that I post. :)

It has been retrofitted with an electric motor and had a base screwed onto the bottom of it so it can stand alone.
