You know, I've felt a lot better since I quit watching the news. Less sad, less filled with rage, more chipper. What the fuck does that say about me? I guess ignorance really is bliss...

wtf mate?

i once knew a guy called crazy steve whose rule of thumb was to stop watching the news when he started talking back to the tv. it was cognitive therapy for CS because if he got too out of whack, he went on a binge and started doing very, very rough trade and also children. i have always kept this in mind -- not that diddling little boys is my thing, but that TV news, especially the 4 to 6, weather reports, and limbaugh, are actually designed to alarm and piss you off and keep you watching.

I used to watch the news (and read it and download it and whatever) religiously because of an obsessive need to know what's going on the in world. Once I realized that all that happened was that after absorbing the global drama my nerves would be shot and my blood pressure would rise, I decided that maybe I should cut back on it. So I quit watching TV news. Then I quit reading newspapers. Then news sites. Then I'd grab my MP3 player whenever I carpooled somewhere with my folks rather than listen to talk radio.

My life has been so, so much less stressful without it.
