Plot synopsis Rosemary Tarragon:
Age: 14
The main character and the only character you'll play as. Fourteen years old, Rosemary aspires to be her village's witch. To be such is a great responsibility and essentially means not only studying a great deal of magic, but also aiding in the local troubles of the villagers, acting as village mid-wife and generally dealing with unpleasantries. Having an Alchemist for a father, Rosemary has a great head start in her education, both magical and not. She's a calm, level-headed girl and rather bookwormish. She values knowledge above all else and aspires to be a great sorceress one day. A clever and compassionate girl, she knows the path she set out to take.
Myrrh Stevia:
Age: 23
A young sailor aboard the trade ship Goldenseal. Wounded, and barely cognitive, Rosemary brought him to her home and tended to his injuries as best she could. He seems to have a connection with the village though he lacks any memory of the place.
Basil Tarragon:
Age: 42
Rosemary's father. A talented Alchemist, and renowned for several breakthrough discoveries in Alchemy. After the death of his wife he retired, still quite young, from his job in the city and settled down in Barberry Village to spend his time raising his daughter and dappling in research and education. During Rosemary's absence, however, it seems that the old spark Basil lost after his wife's death returned and he busied himself in a personal project.
Marjoram Clove:
Age: Unknown
A clever and well-known sorceress. She may seem easy-going and rather... lax in terms of morals, but she is a surprisingly strict and skilled teacher. Anything but conventional, Marjoram holds the respect of Basil, although her ideas seem to baffle the rest of the world.
Pennyroyal 'Pepper' Coriander:
Age: 17
The son of a blacksmith, and seventeen years of age, Pepper came to Barberry when he was eleven to study Alchemy under Basil. During his stay in the Tarragon household, he and Rosemary got along like a house on fire; there were usually few survivors. Otherwise quite laid back to the point of almost being lazy, Pepper is actually quite talented.
Mayor Juniper Thyme:
Age: 54
A plump and bumbling man in person, Juniper is actually quite competent otherwise as a politician. Once a rather skilled sorcerer, he settled into Barberry village and is more than content to remain a small-town official.
Farmer Turmeric Cranesbill:
Age: 87
A lonely old man. He was married once, long before Basil and Rosemary arrived in the village but his wife is long dead and his children estranged. Or so he says. One of the oldest people living in Barberry.
Professor Sage Cardamom:
Age: 27
A schoolteacher and the village doctor, Sage lives in the lighthouse on the rocky cliffs above the sea cave. Peer and friend to Basil despite their age gap, when Sage is not teaching or maintaining the lighthouse, he and Basil are often discussing their research. Despite being quite well off and having the admiration of many young women in the village, he has yet to marry; preferring instead a bachelor's lifestyle.
Chervil Caraway:
Age: 39
Once the butler of the Tarragon manor, Chervil quit when he inherited the local Inn, shortly before Basil arrived. He still lives just east of the manor.
Anise Caraway:
Age: 15 but appears no older than 11
Rosemary's best friend growing up. Oddly enough, she hasn't aged at all since Rosemary last saw her. And for some reason she is unable to speak but it seems like she has a lot she needs to say.
Celandine Sarsaparilla:
Age: Unknown
A gypsy witch trapped in the mirror in the Tarragon attic. Many years ago she was bound to the mirror by a powerful sorceror who was her rival, friend and lover. Rosemary's father acquired the mirror by chance and has been trying to free Calendine for several years. The Gypsies often come to Barberry to pay their respects to Celandine who was renowned for her fortune telling.
Witch Hazel:
Age: Over 400
Witch Hazel takes many guises, her favourite of which is the stereotypical old hag. She came to Barberry Village two years before Rosemary left, and opened her apothecary. Why a talented, shape changing witch who is said to work for royalty would settle in a backwater place like Barberry is a total mystery.
Triphala Horehound:
Age: Unknown
A man who changed the very shape of magic. His past is shrouded in mystery, although he has a connection to Basil, Celandine, Juniper, and Witch Hazel. He hasn't been heard from in over twenty years.
Puck:
Age: Unknown
A faun who lives beside the Fay Tree in the North East Woods. He guards the protrusion in the tree that is shaped like a woman, sometimes refering to her as 'mother'. He makes a deal with Rosemary to help her save her village if she agrees to be his wife when she has lived for two decades.
