So I have this fig tree. And at first it wasn't a hassle picking figs. There really weren't that many that had ripened... until now that is ( Read more... )

Check with the local homeless shelter, if there is one nearby. I'm sure the worthless hobos less fortunate folks might like a little variety in thier diet. You know, a change from spam and creamed corn.

The problem with fresh figs is that they only stay good for few hours after picking them from the tree. They start to sour almost immediately unless stored in a fridge and even then they only stay good a couple days in the fridge.

They're so delicate I don't think they'd be welcomed at the shelters.

In an ideal, Peanuts kind of world, I'd say make the jars up, pop them on the front lawn with a little box that says "donations in lieu of jars and hassle". Of course the jars of figs would be posted back through your letter box and the box would be stomped on, and its content used to buy eggs to hurl at your front door. *le sigh*

LOL

Actually I might just try that. Do some jam and put the jars in my front yard saying free to a good home. Most people in the neighborhood already know about my fig plight because I've been pawning figs off on em.

Can you do preserves?

I've thought of making preserves. I have all the tools to do it. The Jam is pretty good. I'm also thinking of possibly making a little savory fig dish with proschutto and goats cheese. Sounds pretty tastey.

Donate them to someone who gives out food to those who need it.

I toyed with that, but unfortunately figs only stay good for a matter of hours after picking. They'll stay longer if you put them in a fridge but only like 2 or 3 days.

Because hubby and i are chefs , i felt i needed to go looking, the old git next door has a massive tree , full oif ripe figs, but rather than let people pick them, he had just let them fall off, and stink the stret out with the smell of rancid fruit. not effing pleasant.

Ooo drying them looks pretty easy on an oven rack. I might try that.

Definitely making my own version of fig newtons this weekend though. The dough looks dead simple. And I have to say, my figs are very flavorful. They're either Alma, Panachee, or another sweet red fleshed fig. Very sweet and good fresh.

And umm.. LOL on the chilled toilet paper. hehehe
