ASIST training

I've spent the last 2 days learning how to intervene if I suspect someone is feeling suicidal. As you might imagine, it was rather unsettling. Suicide is always going to be an emotional topic but in addition to that all the participants had experience of suicidal behaviour either through clients or through friends and family - most through both - ( Read more... )

That sounds harrowing, but also really useful. Are you able to give, like, a potted summary of things, or is it one of those 'too little knowledge is dangerous' things? Cos I feel like it would be useful for me to know, too.

*love* That sounds incredibly difficult, challenging and confronting. But also really worthwhile. I am thinking gentleness in your direction because I too loathe making mistakes publicly.

I guess it also primes you for your next training - I'm pretty sure one was lost last time due to a similar dislike of making mistakes in front of others.
Well done to make it through all the roleplays. I actually find them worse than the real thing, because they are so artificial. If you did want to debrief, you're welcome to give me a call.

Yes, it's very difficult as a trainer. I don't want to frighten off my volunteers but I don't see how they can learn the skills without practising. I was sympathising with the ASIST trainers and that's one of the reasons I made such an effort to join in.

I really appreciate the debrief offer but I don't think it'll be necessary. The trainers were very thorough with debriefing each scenario and emphasising self-care at the end of each day.
