We could invent who we are. Yeah, who knows. [

The atmosphere backstage is thick with sweat and anticipation. Minseok grips his microphone with sweaty hands, the metal sticky underneath his palms. Even after the years of promoting and going on variety shows he still gets that uneasy wave of anxiety that pitches around in his gut right before he goes on camera. He shifts the microphone to one hand, pressing his other palm against his stomach as he tries to resist the urge to run a hand through his carefully arranged hair.
The back of his neck is itching from the tag of his button-up, but it's too late to do anything about it. He needs something to take his mind off of the waiting. Filming was supposed to start five minutes ago but they still aren't ready. He shifts his weight from foot to foot, waiting for someone to come and tell him the updated schedule.
"Long time no see."
The voice is too familiar for Minseok to ignore, and he turns slightly. It's hard to stop the quirking of a smile across his face and even though he hasn't seen Luhan in a few months, the years of friendship between them make every meeting between them comfortable.
"What are you doing here?" Nervousness forgotten, he leans forward to pull Luhan in for a half-hug. He squeezes his friend gently before stepping back and looking at his clothes with an amused grin. Next to Luhan's silver pullover and skintight white jeans, Minseok's button-up and dark slacks look horrendously normal. "I can't believe my manager didn't mention that you were going to be a guest."
"Last minute addition." Luhan shrugs and the flashy metallic fabric of his stage outfit shines briefly. "When you're promoting for a new album you've got to take all the appearances you can get."
Briefly, Minseok remembers his sister showing him an article about Luhan's new CD. The interview had covered several pages and there were a few full pages dedicated to promotion photos. Luhan had looked good; his eyes were bright and his features were lively with the kind of childish innocence that his face always had. The company was probably going for a sexy image but Minseok just thought about concerts and the way Luhan's skin gleamed lightly with sweat after they finished dancing. And while his sister had squealed over how handsome Luhan looked, Minseok had just smiled, thinking that he was glad that Luhan's cheeks looked healthy and how relieved he was to see determination in his eyes.
The Luhan standing beside him looks much the same and Minseok smiles crookedly. "Mr. Popular," he teases playfully as he looks Luhan over, trying to memorize enough to keep him satisfied until their next meeting.
Luhan turns to face him, and when he catches Minseok staring he holds the gaze. "You say that like I'm the only one who's been doing well these past few years." When he leans closer, his shoulder bumps against Minseok's gently. "We've all picked up solo projects."
It's true. Yixing is a solo artist as well; finally releasing the compositions that he's written over the years. The quiet tone of his concerts are much different than their days as idols, but Yixing seems to like the slower pace of his acoustic compositions, often strumming at a guitar on his lap as he croons out a ballad.
Tao has moved into action movies. He's famous for movies mixing martial arts with romance. And maybe as the years have passed there are fewer martial arts scenes and more romance ones, but his fans don't seem to mind and as long as the movies still do well at the box office there's not much for his manager to complain of.
Jongdae, the only one who's stayed with SM this entire time, is finally going to debut in Japan after releasing his second album. Recently Minseok has been getting panicked Line messages asking about the proper way to say things in Japanese (as if he actually knows) and sometimes Jongdae makes Minseok listen to him sing snatches of his new songs.
And Minseok--
"I watch your drama, you know." Luhan admits. His smile brightens as their arms press together. Minseok's probably already going to sweat through the long sleeve shirt. He should be moving away and trying to keep his dignity intact. But for some reason he stays there, sweat clinging to the very threads of the cotton shirt.
Cheeks reddening, Minseok brings his free hand up to claw at the collar of his shirt, laughing nervously. "What do you think?" He's hosted TV shows and acted in some smaller roles, but this is his first time acting as a main character. The combination of pressure and responsibility making him nervous and excited all at once. His manager always tells him that the ratings are good, but numbers mean less to Minseok than his friends' thoughts do.
"The writing is really great. All the cliffhangers really got me on the edge of my seat." Luhan nods, huffing in disapproval. He glances over at Minseok, smiling wryly and adding as a side thought. "And your acting is okay. I guess."
Minseok doesn't mean to respond. He's going to ignore the baited comment, he's going to be the bigger man and walk away from the fight-- but he whines before he can stop it, "Only okay?"
"Not as good as Tao, but--" Luhan's lips quirk as he tries to keep himself from smiling and Minseok is this close to messing up their carefully styled outfits just for the sake of giving him a good ole noogie.
"Please. Like you need to know how to act to be in a romance." Minseok crosses his arms, eyes trained ahead at the staff members setting up the studio and wondering when the preparations will finally finish.
"Yeah." Minseok isn't expecting Luhan to agree with him and he looks over at his friend sharply. Luhan's voice quivers slightly as he continues, purposely pitching his voice higher and stumbling over the words. "Mother, I... o-only have two hours to live." Dropping his voice back to normal, he chuckles. "A shining moment in acting history for sure."
"Hey! That was my first drama." Minseok protests feebly, giving up and nudging Luhan's shoulder gently. The cameramen are finally in place and it seems like they'll be starting the show soon. There's not much time before they have to go on screen and become Luhan the singer and Kim Minseok the actor. Minseok steals a glance at Luhan, tangling their fingers together and squeezing Luhan's hand gently. "Are you okay?"
Luhan nods, squeezing the hand back.
And that's enough for Minseok. Because out of everything he just wants Luhan to be happy. Sometimes he misses him, and sometimes he finds himself composing messages to Luhan in his head when he can't sleep. But seeing Luhan this calm, this self-assured, and this happy is what makes everything worth it.
Minseok hears the MC announcing him and he flashes Luhan a smile before heading out on stage.
--
("Luhan, I've heard that you're going to appear in a Korean drama soon. Is there any truth to these rumors?" The female announcer shuffles through her cue cards, looking over at Luhan politely while a translator behind Minseok fills in the details.
"Yes. And I'm fortunate enough to be working side by side with a friend of mine...Kim Minseok." Luhan looks to Minseok with a wide grin and Minseok understands enough to pinch Luhan underneath the table as punishment for not telling him earlier. )
