Fresh Virginia apples are the best! For eighteen years of my life, it was a family tradition in October to go up to the mountains south of Charlottesville and get many many bushels of apples. While they weren't picked by us, they were all picked within the past few day before we got there. People always wanted my mom's apple pies, and it was because of the fresh apples made it taste better. If you want good apples, go to the source. :-)

I have grown rather fond of our ohio apples...but you are right, freshness makes the most difference.
