Okay, if anyone hasn't heard from me how freakin corny and plot-less bollywood (indian hollywood) movies are, here is a shining example. Make sure your sound is on, so you can get the full effect. Seriously, that 10 second clip probably sums up the entire movie ( Read more... )

The Indian resturant in Bowling Green (which has changed management and serves more Americanized food now) has a room full of DVD's and videos from India that they sell mostly to Indian families in the area. I've wanted to go check it out. Ever since I saw Ghost World I've been a little curious about Bollywood. I want to see some more crazy 10-minute long dance numbers set to old Indian rock-n-roll.

that's sad that the Indian restaurant you mention is starting to serve more americanized food. How odd, even the McDonalds in India tends to an Indian tounge with the McAloo Tikki burger and the McCurry Veg/non Veg...the menu is really funny , you should check it out at http://www.mcdonaldsindia.com/mencard.htm, and it varies from region to region throughout India.
man, if you're interested in bollywood movies, i am your hook-up.
i have the epitome of a bollywood movie in my possession, and if you've seen one, you've seen them all.
yeah, the "crazy 10-minute long dance numbers set to old Indian rock-n-roll" are great.

Yea, that restaurant used to be the most kick ass place in all of Bowling Green. They gave you MASSIVE plates of nan and basmati rice cooked with cloves, and would bring you a new plateful once those were empty. Now the place serves weak ass tiny plates of white rice with little carrots and peas arranged in a smiley face on top - LAME. And they stopped giving out mango chutney with the appetizers.

...plates of white rice with little carrots and peas arranged in a smiley face on top???? are you serious? that's hilarious. were they taken over by new management or something?
mango chutney is the shiznit. have you ever tried lemon chutney? it's superyummy, makes your mouth water like no other.
Lexington has quite a few Indian grocery stores I can take you to if you want. I stop by Sagar's on Man-o-War once a week to stock up on Mangola - mango juice.

ha ha.
isn't that the guy from american desi?? that's so sad. i have a feeling it might not do as well.

there is one desi movie i think you may like. but sadly i forgot the name of it. basically the main character is going behind his parents back and is a music major. his parents think he is pre-med. and well it's really him trying to face his family and tell them that he doesn't want to be pre-med. (yes there is a love story, but it's not the main focus of the movie.)

oh and have you ever seen the movie fire?? it's addresses homosexuality in the indian society. it's actually banned in india.

i haven't really read a lot of books by indian authors...can you recommend some??

i read this book recently called white teeth. it's really good. about 2nd generation kids growing up with parents who are trying to desperately hold onto their old culture. i really enjoyed that book.

haha, yeah, that's the "ABCD" from American Desi. i kind of liked that movie, even though it was made on like a $100 budget.

i haven't heard of the movie about an art/pre-med major movie you're talking about. sounds interesting. yeah, i guess they have to involve a love story to still appeal to traditional audiences - but don't all movies?, whether they're bollywood or not.

I haven't seen Fire either, sounds interesting, but too bad it was banned, i thought india would have been a bit more liberal in the arts field.

Born Confused is a great book and i highly recommend it. you could really relate to it. it even had indian kids getting high in it. good stuff. you can usually tell an indian book by the cover. for example Brick Lane is one i just saw the other day in barnes and nobles. unfortunately it was about a y arranged marriage.

White Teeth sounds interesting, i'll check that out.

just wanted to let you know that the music major/pre-med movie is called "American Chai"...my friend and i just watched it this past weekend....although the premise would have been good, the acting was bad, very very bad....in fact, the only believable character, IMHO, was Paresh Rawal (i think that's the right spelling) and he just happens to be an excellent actor in all movie genres that he's acted in....my friend and i really couldn't take it seriously b/c of the bad acting, so in finality, whatever point the movie was supposed to get across was lost ( ... )
