I remember where your part of Japan is on a map, and every couple of hours yesterday I'd look at it and say "it's on the other side of the island, I'm sure it was scary but Amanda is probably OK." I was happy when my mom phoned in the evening to let me know, via your grandmother, that you were safe.
Yeah, with the power out, it was hard to get much contact for the first day or so. Electricity and cell phone network were gone, and land lines were a mess. The only thing that DID work was sending emails from my cell phone, oddly enough. One email, and you can start letting people know you're safe.
I actually had no clue what was going on for most of it. The only info I really got was a tiny bit of Japanese news footage on a battery powered TV, and whatever my parents and brother were able to google up for them when we finally connected. Thank god for the internet, that's all I can say.
Things are still tense here, but hopefully the worst is over now. I appreciate the message. Hearing from people has made the last few days a lot more bearable.
There's not much damage in Akita, as far as I know. Maybe some broken windows and cracked pavement in some places, but otherwise fine. The worst we had so far in Akita was a power outage until Saturday, and some supply shortages now. Inconvenient, but it's nothing compared to what people in Iwate and Miyagi are going through.
Things are trying to get back to normal here. Trains still weren't running today, and kids weren't in school today, but hopefully that will change by tomorrow.
Good to hear from you. I appreciate it. Be glad you're in the US right now, it's pretty tense here for the last few days!

Any serious damage on your end of things?
