I have a test shift (ODE?) at a Starbucks in Glasgow. I have to admit that this is the first service job I've had since moving to the UK and it makes it sort of extra intimidating somehow. Just for my general nerves, what exactly are they looking for? Just to make sure I'm not utter rubbish at this ( Read more... )

I had a test shift at a Starbucks in London. It was weird to me that they wanted me to come in for two hours for free and work for them. Anyways, my main resposibility was bussing the lobby every 10 minutes (they gave me a timer) and then helping out with whatever else besides being on bar.

I didn't end up getting the job because I didn't actually bus every 10 minutes (if there's no customers in a 10 minute period, then there's nothing to bus!) However, my advice to you, if they do the same, even though it will be ridiculously tedious, bus every ten minutes!

Basically they were looking to see how well I followed directions. Clearly I failed, but it all worked out for me in the end (I got a much better job than slaving away at Starbucks!)

Good luck!

Noted. I'll be over-detailed in that way.

I'm glad it dis work out for you. This whole job thing has given me a lot of stress. I'd prefer to have to leave a job I don't like than keep searching. (and I honestly think the charity fundraiser job I didn't get was the shitty one that I'm glad didn't work out)

I understand the stress, I hate searching for jobs. Interviews always make me incredibly nervous and I never remember good scenarios to talk about!

I just end up making a mess of interviews. I did have a good day at my test shift. They said they were looking for me to interact with customers, which I did well. I bussed tables, handed off drinks, and handed out samples. I was overtly chatty and friendly so... that should work for me.
