Today I asked coldly why I would want to be patriotic in public. Then I came home and someone had town down and defaced the flag I put up in honor of folks like me and perhaps like you who died on September 11th. I originally thought the wind must have blown it down, but noticed shards of fabric on the grass and picked up my poor flag to find knife ( Read more... )

I don't think its healthy to love a country just because its what you are supposed to do, I think one should love their country because they do what they can to make it worth loving.

But that aside, there is no reason or excuse to deface others hard bought property.

I never said I loved America because I was told or ordered to, it's that being American gives me pride without needing to think of any one specific thing, though I could name many. Also, there is no reason or excuse to deface the flag, especially since it stands as a reminder that our freedoms allow us the ability to legally self-determine actions that would in other countries be unthinkable. It is ironic to me that a torn-up flag is the ultimate symbol of American freedoms, as such an act in many countries would constitute immediate death.

The flag for me has always stood positively for what we as citizens could achieve together, and should not stand negatively in spite of many of the many sad things we have become, especially in recent times.

some people only feel good during acts of destruction. the more important to somebody else the better.
i think it provides a sense of power to people who feel pretty powerless.
