book recs?

Oct 11, 2013 07:58

this afternoon i need to go birthday shopping for a young girl just turning eleven. she has requested 'scary' books, so i thought i'd come to you guys and see if you have any advice on what to get for her. recs for not-scary books are probably okay, too.

anybody have any ideas?

my flist is awesome, recs, books

after googling, i had to assume you were kidding. you would have to seriously sell those to get me to read them, much less an 11yo! =P

The demon's lexicon and Unspoken, both by Sarah Rees Brennan, are scary and adventurous and female positive. And The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson is QUITE creepy.

Not-scarily, I adored the Anastasia books by Lois Lowry when I was that age.

oooooh, i read some lois lowry stuff as a kid. always enjoyed it.

they didn't have any maureen johnson. i just read the demon's lexicon trilogy a couple of months ago, and enjoyed it very much, but i'm not sure if it'll be appropriate for her. and i didn't even know about unspoken until today. but i went ahead and picked up a copy of both, and asked her parents for a photo of her bookshelf, and got some other stuff to give her in case she's not ready for them yet. thanks for the tip!

Unspoken skews a little younger, I think, and it's also MUCH creepier.

Maureen Johnson writes all over the map, so unless you could get The Name of the Star, I can't guarantee creepiness :D

ALSO you should keep in mind that it's been a while since I've gauged the appropriateness for an eleven-year-old as opposed to a fifteen-year-old, so.

we'll find out tomorrow. i'm not sorry i bought them. i've got demon's lexicon on my ereader, but i like having actual books on my shelf. if they don't end up on hers, they'll end up on mine, and i'm okay with that.

frankly, i've got unspoken sitting here next to me, and i'm trying very hard not to read it, because that'd just be rude. =P
