I gave up when I decided not to use a piece of equipment that was better than my other stuff because it didn't go with the outfit. Nothing says that you can't look good while freezing gnolls.
Ha! I know exactly what you mean, i've been doing that since day one. My first character, the orc pirate Blacktusk, has never worn shoulder armor, rarely worn chest and wrist armor, and only wears other pieces (as well as uses weapons) that fit his sense of style.
