Oh, and I am especially interested in what an army/traveller/random person would eat that does *not* fall into the categories of "I took it from somebody," "I bought it," "I killed it," or "I foraged it".

Aaaand I just learn that Mistress Stickbait has been experimenting with "road rations" in the form of an interesting cycle of kvass and coarse bread. Obviously suboptimal for the gluten-free, but might elicit some information...
