inspiration? discouragement?

Sometimes I'm really pleased with myself and the crafty things I do. Other times, I find sites like this:

and I kind of want to just... give up. Nihil novum sub solis? Always room at the top? I dunno.

Holy crap I want one of these! (not going to look at her ebay auctions, not not not)

I know what you mean, but don't be discouraged. Learning and improving is the best satisfaction in life. I think the crafts I've seen from you are pretty damned awesome.

guuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I know!!! I also have to remember that, given the same tools, I could get there if I wanted to. That woman has some serious equipment.

What's getting me a.t.m. is the number of times I get ideas in my head, and then soon afterwards find them all done and laid out perfectly by someone else! Then I'm all like, well fine, I'm going back to bed. :)

Other times, I'm happy to grow in a direction that's new *to me,* even if someone else has already gone there.

Wow...someone actually made an aletheometer (watch). I have to believe that you either don't have a full time job or you devote ALL of your free time to create what these people do. They also need a good deal of space and money to buy the equipment they use. While it may be impossible to achieve their level, I'd still pursue crafts to the extent you can -- and still enjoy your other pursuits. As long as you have fun doing crafts, keep it up! And don't compare yourself to the full time crafters, just use what they've done as ideas for smaller projects.

Let's see. . . while I do fancy having a life with oodles of money, no real job or life, and infinite time for crafting, I feel I must set a few things straight, if only to prove that ANYONE can make cool stuff ( ... )

I apologize for the misrepresentation, but you have to understand that we're just trying to rationalize how someone can make such beautiful things and we can't. :)

BUT, on the other hand, it looks like we can make things with the right tools, time and persistence. Thanks for the information!

I love the Altoids alethiometer! And doesn't sound too tricky either. Are you going to make any other objects from His Dark Materials?

Right now I'm working on the Quibbler from Order of the Phoenix. I do plan on putting up an Altoids-to-alethiometer tutorial at some point (hopefully this month).

I really do believe that anyone can make cool stuff.
