I cannot help but wonder, is my running games and using my creativity for such a thing, while excellent for entertaining people, wasting my creative talents somewhat? I run 2-3 nights a week, and entertain a total of about 15 people a fortnight, some several times, not counting APs, which get thousands of views. I don't have anything specific in ( Read more... )

It's a tough one, Jason. On one hand it's great to entertain friends and acquaintances with stories and games - not only do you put your creativity to use - you also hone your skills. However, I've noticed that the recipients rarely return the gifts, and one easily ends up wasting a lot of energy on a "soil" that doesn't really give any "crops" - there's nothing in it for you in the long run. Should you take your creativity elsewhere then? Well, that's hardly for me to say. I ended up loathing my surroundings for expecting too much from me without giving anything back, and I wasted a lot of time being angry ... I've ended up in a good place now, though, where I'm spending my creativity on myself - but I do miss gaming on occasion.

I don't really look at running as paying energy in return for something so much as an end in itself and its own form of expression. Running games is taxing - even playing a game is taxing for me, though that's probably not true for everyone. Running a game is also directly tied to ones own creativity, but the processes that result in a completed session or campaign are significantly different from, say, writing a story or painting a picture ( ... )
