CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Hwang Bu-ling, Tokyo Mew Mew
In-Game Name: Hwang Bu-ling
Age: 9 (8 when first apped)
Gender: Loli! I mean, girl.
Position & Ship: Amestris, Entertainer
Appearance:Bu-ling is a tiny little girl, but she's hard not to notice. She's quite athletic and, in a move practical of someone who's always bouncing off the walls and climbing on things, her bright blonde hair is cropped very short, usually with four tiny braids hanging out at the back. Said haircut tends to be a mess, considering that she does it herself with kitchen scissors. Her eyes are huge, a deep orange colour that's hard to miss, and marked by dark, pointy eyelashes. Bu-ling's skin tone tends to vary with the weather, but is always a light tan (she's Chinese in canon and usually coloured a little darker than most of the rest of the cast).
She's nearly always smiling and her expressions are quite dramatic, accompanied by lots of stretching, bouncing and flailing. She only has a few outfits to her name, mostly simple or traditional, usually easy to move around in, and always in shades of yellow or orange. When her powers have been partially activated (which is as far as they'll go at this point in time), her ears turn into fuzzy monkey ears and she sprouts a matching tail, both orange-brownish.
Personality: When you see Bu-ling, you will see that she is hyper, she is adorable, and she is downright shameless. She rarely runs out of energy and loves to perform in public and ask for money... and she will not leave you alone until you give her money. She works hard and can do all kinds of circus tricks that take years to master, so she thinks she deserves it; that's all she'll say, anyway. This is where the loli does have some sense of restraint: even though she'll cry and sniffle about how hard she worked and how much she deserves the money people are being stingy with, she won't bother people with sob stories about her family life, no matter how true they are or how strongly they justify her behaviour. She wants to do her family proud and help them out, not use them for more money, even if the money would help. (She also doesn't want her brothers and sister, much less herself, to be taken by social services.)
This says a lot about Bu-ling. Despite what's happened in her life so far, she's usually cheerful, more so than anyone has any right to be. Still, she feels the weight of adult responsibility more than any eight-year-old should, and there are times when she just can't take it. She knows it won't help, though, or thinks it won't, and tries to remain happy for the sake of herself and everyone else. Even still, she won't refuse help if someone sees that she needs it; on the contrary, she will probably love that person for life. She's incredibly friendly and adopts everyone she meets into a metaphorical family, and you may or may not grow to love her... if you can get over the fact that she just will. not. listen.
Abilities/Weapons:
Hax Acrobat - Bu-ling has always been an amazing acrobat, able to jump, climb, balance and dodge very well for someone her age. The effects of the Mu Project have amped this up considerably, and she practices every day because it's useful in her show.
Surpraiz Monkey - The Mu Project experiments have started to take effect on Bu-ling. This leaves her with the ability to turn into a kemonomimi monkeygirl with the emotional trigger of courage or self-sacrifice. In this form, she also has the ability to (sometimes just as unwillingly) summon large boulders. She can't make them do anything, but they're there and make good shields and things to climb on.
The Monkey Whisperer - You heard that right. Bu-ling speaks monkey, even in human form. She even has a pet monkey/sidekick, An-nin, a tiny little monkey whom she talks to who performs in her shows. She can tell An-nin to do anything and he'll probably do it.
Bold - Some people are shy, awkward, polite, or otherwise hampered in getting what they want. Not Loli Monkey here. She will glomp people, make a big show, outright ask them, and pout when they say no. She will also probably then stalk them until they say yes; depends if they really upset her or not.
Heir to the Dojo - Seriously. She's the heir to the Yellow Monkey Dojo and practices a style of martial arts her ancestors invented. It is awesome.
Potions Master - Well, not quite. See, the Hwang family has a number of secret formulas for curing illness, repelling rats, knocking out guards, and other things, all made from local herbs and plants. She has memorized a few of them, mainly the most useful ones.
How well can your character hack?: Not at all!
Weaknesses:
Tiny Loli is Tiny - As athletic as she is, Bu-ling is still an eight-year-old girl. She can put up a fight, but she's not very big or strong and has to get by on agility and flexibility.
Bold - SOMETIMES you need to be polite and roundabout and sneaky and yeah, no, that's not going to happen with her ever in a million years ever. She is blatant about who she is and what she wants.
Uneducated - Her family's poor and she spends all day making money so they can pay the bills, so Bu-ling has rarely ever gone to school. She tends to get terms wrong, make big assumptions that are wrong half the time, and act like she knows more than she really does.
Obnoxious - She thinks far too highly of herself at times and pushes herself into everybody's business. This cannot go well.
Hard To Take Seriously - She's a tiny little uneducated eight-year-old who climbs on everything, gets into everything, and calls everyone oniichan or oneechan. She then acts surprised and offended when people do not take her seriously, for some reason.
History: The Hwang family was once an old, established family in Melior, famous for running the Yellow Monkey Dojo to train people from all backgrounds to defend themselves and their homes from monsters and enemies alike. That was decades ago. The current generation of the Hwang family inherited their poverty from the last, which faded from public notice long before Bu-ling and her five younger siblings were born, though the dojo still stands and was, until recently, run by her father.
Bu-ling grew up the most responsible of the six children, and did most of the chores around the house. She was also trained by the dojo, although she wasn't a prodigy or anything -- just normal for her age. She still had time for fun, though, and lots of it. Whenever she could, Bu-ling would run out and play, flitting to whatever looked fun. She always watched the buskers and performers in the park for her own entertainment and then went home and tried to imitate them to keep her brothers and sister occupied. This kept her frail mother and busy father free to breathe without being swarmed by children, so Bu-ling felt duty-bound to do it.
Around two years ago, though, Bu-ling's mother died of an illness. Her father, partially out of grief and partially from a dedication to his martial arts, left the dojo to some family friends and went off to go training by himself in a remote mountain in the Badlands. This left Bu-ling nominally taken care of by her father's students, but in practice, single-handedly in charge of her and her siblings' well-being.
It wasn't fair, but it had to be done, and Bu-ling didn't want to lose her house and siblings along with her parents. She worked hard to perfect every street performance or circus trick she knew of, and she took to the parks and the busy streets to perform for what money she could get. She became very loud and very obnoxious just to get noticed and earn enough money to feed her siblings. Bu-ling scraped by for the next two years, picking up her sidekick/pet monkey An-nin after an unfortunate incident involving a zoo breakout that she just happened to be there for and that none of those involved prefer to ever mention again, and trained him to help her out as well.
Then one day, Bu-ling had been in the park performing and went indoors to a busy science museum when it got too hot outside. Not having had anything to eat or drink since that morning, she grabbed what looked like a glass of water off a tray and chugged it, passing out soon afterwards. Bu-ling can't remember much about what happened next, but she does recall having a dream about a monkey merging with her body. The truth was, she'd just drank an experimental solution that wasn't supposed to be there (or was it?), part of the Mu Project, an underground experiment meant to turn normal humans into part-animal magical beings and combat the suspected misuses of science already going on in other Ivonian laboratories. Bu-ling was and still is unaware of any of this, and just thinks she passed out from hunger. Her life continued as normal, though she unconsciously became even more flexible and athletic, and An-nin listened to her much more intently...
Bu-ling hasn't been making enough money performing in the streets lately, and as a result began looking for other work. She demanded to be allowed on the Amestris the moment she saw it, citing her amazing skills at everything ever (and possibly exaggerating some of it). She intends to send most to all of her paycheque back home to her brothers and sister.
SAMPLES-
Third Person (roleplay):
"Come one, come all!"
This particular pedestrian square was usually packed with people, and so the entertainers would come out and do what they did best every day. Musicians were common, sitting on a street corner or standing beside a staircase, singing and playing the violin or some other handheld instrument. Dancing happened sometimes, but usually with the musicians. Sometimes there were people doing circus tricks. One time there'd been a team of magicians with a table and a pile of props.
Then there was her.
"Come and enjoy the show nano da!" A little girl's voice rang out from the fountain in the centre of the square. Passersby who looked up would see a tiny girl with bright yellow hair and an obnoxiously orange outfit doing a one-handed handstand on top of the statue in the fountain and swinging hoops from both her legs and her free arm. "It'll be great no da!"
She swiveled her head from left to right and counted the number of people standing and gaping. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Good enough! The little girl twirled the three hoops from her limbs and slung them all straight up into the air. She sprung from her hand into a flip and landed on her feet, still on the tip of the statue. All three hoops fell down right onto her, and she swivelled left and right, catching them all on her hips at exactly the right time. The passersby-turned-audience clapped, and the little girl smiled. She wasn't done yet.
"Now!" She swung the hoops upward and brought them over her head with her hand, then stashed them in a cranny of the statue. From there she pulled out a unicycle, then leapt to the edge of the fountain and climbed onto the seat. She pulled juggling balls out of a bag tied onto the side of the unicycle, tossed the bag onto a protruding arm on the statue, and started to pedal. The crowd amassed larger and larger around the fountain, with people straining from the back to see the little girl juggling while riding a unicycle.
"Isn't Bu-ling's show great?", she called out while tossing the juggling balls in the air. "Seeing this is worth a lot of money for sure nano da!"
First Person (journal):
THIS IS SO AWESOME NANO DA.
Bu-ling gets her own room finally! She never had one before, never ever ever in the world, except when she was really, really little no da. And, and it's so cool, it even has a window! Does everybody have a room like this?
Hmm... it's kind of boring though. Does anybody have plants or old posters or things to put on the walls that they don't want anymore? Bu-ling will take good care of them! It's just that a boring room would really suck, and Bu-ling wants something FUN AND EXCITING nano da.
Bu-ling is fun and exciting, so her room should match.
Oh! And An-nin needs his own bed too, of course. Bu-ling can make one out of a pile of blankets and a cushion, though. Or even just the blankets. Or rags, even. But the point is, Bu-ling needs something like that or else her poor monkey sidekick will freeze at night and get frostbite ears and nobody wants that at all because An-nin never did anything to you, now did he? No.
Bu-ling also needs more juice.
